Sumbul Siddiqui, the First Muslim Woman to Become Mayor of Cambridge, USA

Kapanlagi.com - A Muslim woman named Sumbul Siddiqui has just made history in the United States. On Monday (6/1), the Palestinian-born woman was appointed as the Mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts. This is the first time a Muslim has held the position of Mayor in the entire state of the US.

Sumbul, 31, was chosen to serve as Mayor through voting conducted by the City Council. Siddiqui will serve as the Chair of the City Council as well as the School Committee. In addition, she has the authority to manage the city and oversee institutions and services.

Sumbul did not suddenly appear and become Mayor. Since 2018, she has been a member of the council before finally replacing Mayor Marc McGovern, whose term has ended, as reported by bostonherald.com.

Siddiqui was born in Karachi, Pakistan. When he was two years old, he moved to the US with his parents after winning a lottery and buying an affordable house in Cambridge. He earned a bachelor's degree in public policy from Brown University and a law degree from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.

"As mayor, I am committed to leading this council into a new decade. We will rise to address the challenges our community faces," said Siddiqui.

Some of the programs that Siddiqui will implement include providing affordable housing, creating economic opportunities to address inequality, and improving responses to racism within government institutions.

"At the same time, we will engage with regional issues such as climate resilience and investment in public infrastructure," he added.
