The selection of the Committee Chairman began in December 2023 involving stakeholders of the Indonesian Film Board (BPI). They proposed candidates who were then selected to become the three chosen names.

"Associations and film organizations propose candidate names, either from the association itself or anyone considered competent according to agreed criteria," said Vivian Idris, Head of the Festival and Event Organizer Division of BPI, in a press conference in the Senayan area, Central Jakarta, on Monday (22/4/2024).

"After the names are collected, BPI invites former chairmen from previous periods for a hearing. Then, a closed meeting is held between the management, supervisors, and BPI council to determine the short list," he added.

After obtaining three candidate names, the Indonesian Film Board immediately conducted online interviews with two willing candidates. Eventually, Ario Bayu was chosen as the Chairman of the FFI Committee for the next three years.

"On February 5, an interview was conducted with two candidates because one person was not willing to be nominated. The interview was conducted by the Director General of Culture and the BPI management. After the interview, we immediately held a meeting to determine the chairman," continued Vivian Idris.

When chosen as a candidate for the Chairman of the FFI Committee, Ario Bayu admitted that he was worried about his ability to lead this prestigious film event. However, after seeing how the film shaped his life, he felt it was time to contribute back.

"I didn't actually refuse, but I was worried about what I could contribute. But after discussing it, I realized that the film has contributed a lot to myself," said Ario in a different interview session.

"With the existence of films, FFI and the film ecosystem, I can become a functioning human being for society. So why shouldn't I give back?" he concluded.
