1. Becoming a Hotdog and the Statue of Liberty in Times Square

Asri Welas recounts an unusual moment when she had to appear in a unique costume while filming RATU RATU QUEENS: THE SERIES. She admitted that she had to wear a bright red hotdog costume, transforming into the Statue of Liberty with a green outfit and body. "There’s nothing pretty about it," she joked.

The experience felt even more special because the filming took place right around Times Square, New York. In fact, the location was even specially blocked off by the production team for the scene. "I felt like (I was) Angelina Jolie, felt like Beyonce," she joked during a press conference in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday (12/9/2025).

Interestingly, Asri's scenes as a hotdog and the Statue of Liberty were done on two different occasions. She vividly remembers how the streets around Times Square were closed twice just for her. "Times Square was still blocked off by Netflix, it was insane," she said.

2. From Being Given Money to Being Expelled by the Police

The story becomes even more unique when Asri Welas reveals that she once received money from people who saw her on the street. While walking in costume, there were citizens who directly gave her tips. "When I was walking, I got 5 dollars, 2 dollars, I was really given money," she revealed.

She added that the crew didn’t even know about that moment because they were already at another location. "The producer and the director didn’t know because they had gone to set first," Asri explained. Nirina Zubir, who was also present, chimed in jokingly, "We never got that money, you know. It went into (Asri's) own pocket."

In addition, there was another funny experience while shooting on the streets of New York. Asri was once expelled by the police because she was mistaken for a street vendor. "The police didn’t know we were shooting, and then said, 'you can’t be here.' So I and the others were expelled," she said. She then added jokingly, "They didn’t know we were movie actors, right?".

This diaspora-themed series tells the story of four Indonesian women played by Nirina Zubir, Asri Welas, Happy Salma, and Tika Panggabean who struggle to survive in New York. Directed by Lucky Kuswandi, RATU RATU QUEENS: THE SERIES premiered on September 12, 2025, with a total of six episodes.
