IDGITAF Shares the Story of the Microtia Condition Experienced, Previously Called Disabled by a Nurse

Through a video on his TikTok account, he describes the impact on the shape of his left ear and his hearing ability, while also touching on people's responses to his condition.

He recounts the moment when his condition was first discovered after childbirth.

"So I have had microtia since I was little (born). It was immediately noticed by the nurse. And she was not very good at informing, until my mom started bleeding. So she told my mom, 'Ma'am, your child is disabled,'" said IDGITAF.

In his explanation, IDGITAF mentioned that the condition of his left ear was detected from the very first day he was born by the medical staff who assisted with the delivery. He shared this situation openly on TikTok, including how the information was conveyed to his family.

Microtia is a congenital condition where the outer ear (pinna) does not develop properly during pregnancy. The shape and severity can vary among individuals, depending on how well the outer ear structure has formed.

Generally, microtia is divided into four grades. Grade 1 means the ear is smaller than normal but most of its structure is still formed. Grade 2 indicates more limited ear development. Grade 3 is typically marked by the outer ear being only partially formed. Grade 4 is called anotia, which is when the outer ear is not formed at all.

2. Grade 2 Microtia

IDGITAF states that she is in the grade 2 category. She also explains the difference in hearing ability between her right and left ears.

"Microtia has 4 grades, I am grade 2. If asked whether I can hear or not, I can, but it's very uneven. This one (right) is 100%, this one (left) is 40%," she said.

The condition of microtia can be related to the ear canal and hearing, but its impact is not the same for everyone. Some have relatively good hearing, while others experience disturbances in the affected ear.

In IDGITAF's case, the shape of her left ear is different from her right ear. Besides the aspect of appearance, she mentions that the impact is felt on hearing function, so she needs to adapt in her daily activities.

3. Initial Causes

When discussing the origins of her condition, IDGITAF shares a story she heard from her mother regarding the consumption of certain medications during pregnancy.

"Talking about the cause, my mother said it was because she took medication that was not allowed during pregnancy," said IDGITAF.

From a medical perspective, the cause of microtia in many cases cannot always be determined. The influencing factors can vary, and the condition can occur on its own or be associated with certain syndromes.

4. Once Wanted Surgery

Adolescence became a rather tough period for him. He admitted that he once thought about undergoing reconstructive surgery due to feelings of shame and comments from those around him.

"Honestly, back in middle school, I thought about having surgery because I was embarrassed. And people just don’t think. But as time went on, I became more indifferent," he said.

For some people with microtia, reconstructive ear surgery can be one option. Treatment is usually individualized and can involve ENT specialists (ear, nose, throat, head, and neck), plastic surgeons, audiologists, and other healthcare professionals. Besides the shape of the ear, hearing evaluation is an important part, especially if there are issues with the affected ear.

Over time, IDGITAF claims to have become more at ease with his condition. If during middle school he considered surgery out of insecurity, now he states that he does not care much about other people's comments.

Microtia is classified as a relatively rare condition. The approach to treatment can vary for each person, influenced by the development of the ear, the condition of the ear canal, hearing ability, and the individual needs of each patient.

By openly sharing his experiences, IDGITAF shows that having a different physical condition does not prevent him from continuing to create. He chooses to move forward with what has been a part of him since birth.
