“I was very happy, even I requested the invitation from Istiqlal because I read works related to Pope Francis,” said Habib Jafar when met at Istiqlal Mosque, South Jakarta, Thursday (5/9/2024).

“I watched films, documentaries that tell stories about Pope Francis. I wanted to get to know Pope Francis more closely after knowing him from afar. And I felt that harmony,” Habib Jafar continued.

The 37-year-old man stated that the harmony he felt strengthened his imagination of the Pope as a humanitarian figure. When asked about the attitude of Pope Francis that is worth emulating, Habib Jafar mentioned the Pope's simplicity as one of the very significant values.

"The most popular is his simplicity. Perhaps I will provide one fact that is different from what is widely circulated. What is widely circulated about his residence, about his car, and then about the plane he took to come here,” he explained.

Habib Jafar also highlighted the Pope's watch, which costs only Rp124,000. “Meanwhile, I wear an Apple Watch. The Pope wears it with simplicity. This is certainly a blow and a harsh criticism to...” he said.

Habib Jafar explained that Pope Francis, through his attitude of simplicity, delivers a clear message about the importance of self-introspection amidst the hedonism often exhibited by today's youth. One interesting detail shared by Habib Jafar is about Pope Francis's shoes.

“The Pope's shoes are usually red and white. That’s what Cardinal Suhario told me. However, Pope Francis chose worn-out black shoes, which have many creases that can no longer be straightened,” he said.

According to Habib Jafar, the Pope's simple actions are a critique of the hedonistic lifestyle that is widely shown on social media. “He is a very simple person. And I think this is very important for the youth in Indonesia who often display hedonism and extravagance, which causes social jealousy,” he explained.

Habib Jafar also emphasized the negative impact of social media that often showcases luxury. “How bad it is for us to give a bad impression through social media to people who are far away. In fact, we are taught, for example in the context of Islam, never to talk about food to someone who is hungry. Never talk about drinks to someone who is in need of water,” he said.

He added, “Never talk about your advantages to someone who sees that as a disadvantage.” According to Habib Jafar, Pope Francis's message about simplicity is an invitation to be more sensitive to the surrounding conditions and wiser in interactions.
