Mediation Fails, Baim Wong and Paula Verhoeven Compete for Child Custody

The mediation process between Baim Wong and Paula Verhoeven, facilitated by the mediator judge at the South Jakarta Religious Court, has failed to reach an agreement. Baim Wong remains firm in his desire to divorce, while Paula Verhoeven wants to maintain their marriage.

As a result, both parties are now preparing to fight for their child custody. Fahmi Bachmid, Baim Wong's legal counsel, revealed that after the mediation, Baim and Paula agreed to bring the child custody issue to court.

“So after the mediation, Baim and Paula chose to discuss the child in front of the mediator judge. Everything was verbally stated earlier,” said Fahmi after the hearing at the South Jakarta Religious Court on Wednesday (23/10/2024).

According to Fahmi, at the next hearing scheduled for next Monday, a written request regarding child custody will be submitted to the court. "Next Monday, a written request regarding the children will be submitted to the Court," he continued.

The mediating judge hopes for the best solution between Baim and Paula regarding child custody. Both must provide arguments as to why they feel more deserving of custody rights.

"This mediation is not just about divorce, but also about child custody. Therefore, it is part of the request submitted to the court," Fahmi explained.

Baim claims that his children feel more comfortable being with him. Meanwhile, Paula also feels that their two children are better off being raised by their mother.

"But everything has been discussed, then Baim and Paula will be asked to convey everything in writing, containing what is best for the children," added Fahmi.

On the other hand, Alvon Kurnia Palma, Paula Verhoeven's attorney, stated that his client wants the child custody dispute process to go well and prioritize the children's interests. Paula, he said, wants to discuss directly with Baim to consider what is best for their two children.

"Because the children are not yet 12 and 9 years old. This means there must be a process that provides comfort for the children moving forward," said Alvon.

Alvon also emphasized that Paula wants to maintain the family's honor by not revealing each other's shame in order to protect their children's future.

"Paula wants this divorce to proceed without discussing matters that could tarnish the family's image, for the sake of the children," he said.

Regarding child custody, Alvon stated that according to the law, children under 12 years old are generally in the custody of the mother. However, Baim feels he has the same right to raise their two children. "But later we will prove everything in court," concluded Alvon.
