Mother Asks to Listen to Spiritual Songs, Here Are 8 Photos of Angelina Sondakh Grateful to Accompany Her Mother Despite Having to Struggle Alone

Busyness does not prevent Angelina Sondakh from being by her mother's side who is struggling against dementia. She describes being able to accompany her mother as an irreplaceable blessing.

"Many people have a lot of money but don’t have the opportunity to care for their parents. And I imagine that if I were working like I used to, I might never be able to accompany my mom," said Angelina when met at TPU Jeruk Purut, South Jakarta, Monday (14/4/2025). Here are the details.

Although I could only accompany them fully for the last two weeks, I felt that time was very meaningful. I see it as a blessing that should be appreciated. "But yesterday, for a full 2 weeks, I was still able to, I am grateful, it turns out this is a great blessing. I am still able to be given sustenance and at the same time given time to take care of my parents," he said.

Angelina also shared a story about her mother's habit of enjoying spiritual songs. She tries to fulfill every request from her mother, especially those related to worship.

"Yes, for me, whatever my parents request, if they ask to be prayed for, for example, 'please send a pastor', or 'please, I want to hear this church song'," she said.

"What can I do to please my parents, bismillah, Allah is All-Knowing, Allah knows my intentions, I want to accompany my mom," she continued.

As a child, Angelina admits she has to be extra patient in dealing with her mother’s condition, which often involves tantrums. She understands that communication difficulties pose a significant challenge in caring for elderly individuals with dementia.

"Oh bismillahirrohmanirohim, my mom has dementia, so when she has dementia, we have difficulty communicating. Sometimes, when I ask her how she feels or what’s wrong, she throws a tantrum. For example, if I say, 'Where is it, ma? Work,' she must follow her desires, otherwise her blood pressure goes up, which affects her heart and later causes problems with her oxygen saturation," she explained.

Angelina learns to maintain her mother's emotional stability. She realizes that high blood pressure due to emotions can lead to serious complications. "So sometimes it might be hard to understand for someone who doesn't see how it is to take care of a parent who is sick with dementia. So when we ask her to eat, she gets angry, and sometimes we still have to keep her emotional stability so that her blood pressure stays at 120/130," she said.

She is very cautious because if her mother has a tantrum, her blood pressure can rise drastically. This becomes a particular fear because it can endanger her heart condition. "If we don't follow what she wants, she throws a tantrum, and that causes hypertension, her blood pressure rises, her heart works faster, pumping faster directly into the blood vessels, that's what we are afraid of," said Angelina.
