Oki Rengga Was Afraid of Bad Luck Playing a Character Who Doesn't Believe in God

MDTV, in collaboration with Netflix, officially launched the latest satirical comedy drama series titled World Without God. At a press conference held at MD Place, Setiabudi, South Jakarta, on Thursday (12/2/2026), this series introduced its cast, including comedian and actor Oki Rengga.

The man known for his Medan accent was cast to play a character named Oki, a figure who is depicted as having lost his way and questioning the existence of God. Playing a character that contradicts his personal beliefs turned out to be a burden for the former goalkeeper of PSMS Medan.

Oki admitted that he felt scared and uncomfortable when he had to say dialogues that questioned the existence of the Creator, considering he is a religious person in real life. The fear of the impact of those words on his family haunted his thoughts during the shooting process.

"The difficulty is also, this is really hard for me. Because here my character is really a person who does not know God at all. That is very difficult while I always have God in front of my eyes," said Oki Rengga to the media crew.

Oki's worries intensified when he had to engage in dialogues challenging God for the sake of the scene. He even remembered his son, Arthur, who is still small when he had to perform that scene. However, professionalism as an actor required him to remain fully committed, while reassuring himself that this is just a role for the sake of a story that has a moral message in the end.

"I have a feeling in my heart like 'Ki, you're being too bold saying this.' But Ki... Arthur is still a kid, Ki, he needs the funds, it's okay, right?" he joked, which was met with laughter from the media crew.

Besides internal challenges, Oki also faced technical difficulties in acting. Used to performing in feature films that demand natural and subtle expressions, Oki initially struggled to adapt to the acting style of soap operas or television series that require larger and more dramatic expressions. This even became a source of teasing from his friend, Lolok, who also stars in this series.

Lolok revealed that Oki had a "fever" for three days just thinking about how to express shock like in soap operas. According to Lolok, the director often asked Oki to raise his level of expression because it was considered too flat for a television show that targets a broader and more fluid audience.

"He had a fever for three days thinking about that, Sir, really! 'I'm a movie actor, but why is it so hard for me?' For three days he was feverish, just like being shocked in a soap opera," Lolok expressed, mimicking Oki's complaint.

Despite facing various challenges, Oki feels grateful to be involved in this project. Moreover, he gets to act alongside senior actors like Eza Yayang, whom he has admired since school. Oki hopes this series can provide a new perspective for viewers about faith through the guise of comedy.

"I used to watch Bang Eza when I was still in school, and now I can act alongside him, it's just amazing," concluded Oki Rengga.

The World Without God tells the story of Oki and Lolok, two migrants from Medan who get caught in chaos in a suburb of Jakarta due to the actions of Jahal, a boastful new rich person. The conflict peaks when Jahal "rises from the grave" as a pocong and claims to be a powerful guardian. This series is scheduled to air starting February 18, 2026, every day at 6:00 PM WIB on MDTV and Netflix.
