Olivia Zalianty Reveals Ray Sahetapy's Last Dream to Make a Film About Hearing Impairment

The passing of Ray Sahetapy not only left deep sorrow for family and fans but also left behind aspirations that were not yet realized. One of them is the late artist's dream to make a film themed around disabilities, specifically about the hearing impaired.

Actress Olivia Zalianty shared this memory when met at TPU Tanah Kusir, South Jakarta, on Friday (4/4/2025), after the funeral procession of Ray Sahetapy.

"He really wanted to make a film about the hearing impaired, his last dream was from Manado to America, you know," said Olivia Zalianty.

According to Olivia, the late Ray Sahetapy was very interested in exploring films that communicate through visual language, rather than lengthy dialogues. An approach that she considers very suitable for bringing the issue of hearing impairment to the big screen.

"Film is essentially a language of images, it doesn't need to be verbose, so silent films or what we call hearing impaired films can be a good film," Olivia stated.

Unfortunately, until the end of his life, that dream had not yet been realized. Olivia admitted that the project was still just an idea, as there was neither a script nor a director handling it concretely."The idea is very possible, it's just a matter of finding a great script and director. But it hasn't materialized yet," Olivia continued.

Even so, Olivia does not rule out the possibility of continuing Ray's dream with her fellow professionals. She hopes that Parfi 56 and other film industry colleagues can reflect together and perhaps realize it.

"I hope so, hopefully Parfi 56, my sister, Marcella Zalianty, and other friends, we can sit together again to reflect on that," she said.

Ray Sahetapy is known as a senior actor who not only works in the film industry but is also very concerned about diversity and inclusivity in the arts. The discourse about the deaf film is one of his many contributions of progressive thought in the Indonesian film industry.

The departure of Ray Sahetapy on April 1, 2025, is indeed a great loss for the national entertainment industry. However, Olivia and her colleagues' hope to realize the late artist's dream is one of the most meaningful forms of tribute.
