Portrait of Chikita Meidy Reveals the Hardships of Being a Live TikTok Host, Opponent 'Robot'

Behind the scenes of a live broadcast that seems exciting and interactive, there is a hard struggle that not many people know about. According to Chikita Meidy, being a live selling host is not just about speaking in front of the camera. She and other creators have to face an invisible opponent, which is the platform's algorithm that she refers to as "robot". According to her, the main boss in this job is traffic or viewer traffic.

"Last night I saw the algorithm hasn't returned to normal. Now I have a brand that asked me to try live again to check the sales algorithm. The brand depends on me. They use my services and have already paid for the collaboration upfront, if there's a delay I let them know if they want to change the airing time," said Chikita when met in the Tendean area, South Jakarta, recently.

The struggle against this robot feels increasingly heavy after the live feature became active again. The algorithm that he had painstakingly built has become chaotic, causing the number of viewers to plummet drastically from thousands to only hundreds of people.

This creates a particular concern every time starting a broadcast.

"Usually from 9 PM to 12 AM, when starting live, I just fear that the audience will be sparse. Our boss is traffic, yes, a robot; we are fighting a robot. It's exhausting to broadcast for hours. The host is required to be a salesperson. So, we are hosts, admins, and salespeople too. The flash sale that has been set up can be chaotic if not live. I really feel it. I've opened up and shaped the market. My boss is traffic, and now it's a mess," he said.

This mother of one emphasizes that her dependence on live broadcasts on digital platforms is very high.

For her, the online market reach is much faster and wider compared to conventional methods.

"I really depend on it because online is faster than offline in reaching the world broadly. Yes, now I diligently and consistently go live for at least 3 hours," she explained.

Now, after five years in the affiliate world, Chikita has to work extra hard again to conquer the "robot" and rebuild her empire in the online world, while still trying to balance her time between work and her role as a mother.
