Ruben Onsu Converts to Islam, Ivan Gunawan: Now I Pray Friday with Someone Accompanying Me

Ivan Gunawan also shared the latest news about his friend, Ruben Onsu, who has now embraced Islam. The designer and presenter stated that Ruben is now increasingly diligent in studying religion.

"Masya Allah, Alhamdulillah. I met him yesterday, right, when I was at home. Alhamdulillah Ruben is steadfast, studying religion, now I pray Friday, there’s someone accompanying me at Trans, Alhamdulillah," said Ivan Gunawan when met in the Sawangan area, Depok, Saturday (12/4/2025).

Regarding his habit of praying Friday at the Trans 7 office, which has limited time, Ivan explained that he and Ruben often perform that worship together. According to him, this happens naturally due to the airing schedule of the shows they host.

"Actually, it's not always about accompanying, there are no strict rules about accompanying. But indirectly, we are just together, because our time for Friday prayers is very limited. The airing (Brownis Trans 7) is at half past one, and it finishes at half past one," he explained.

Ivan admitted that he always supports Ruben's spiritual journey. He realizes that public responses on social media are still varied regarding this change."We support him even though if you look at social media, there are still pros and cons. That's normal, right? So we just support him," he said.

Nevertheless, Ivan does not see any drastic changes in Ruben after deciding to convert to Islam. According to him, Ruben remains the same person as before."There are no changes, it's just normal. Nothing sudden happens, nothing drastic, just normal," Ivan said.

This 43-year-old designer also revealed that Ruben's spiritual process has been ongoing for a long time. However, he does not feel worthy of being a place for Ruben to ask questions about religious knowledge.

"If he asks for my input, it seems inappropriate. Because I am still learning too. If I don't know, I ask Mr. Ustaz, I ask someone who understands better than me," he said.

For Ivan, learning religion is a process that has no end. He remains open to continuously asking questions and seeking knowledge from those who understand.

"Because for me, learning has no set time for completion. So anytime I want to ask something, or need something, I ask Mr. Ustaz," he concluded.
