The Final Moments of Mpok Alpa, Breathing Her Last in Her Husband's Embrace

With swollen eyes, Adji recounted the heaviest moments of his life. He shared how Mpok Alpa's condition drastically declined after dawn, when her body temperature started to feel cold from head to toe.

"Later she will sleep again at the dining table in the hospital, later she will sleep, why, ma, tell her to sleep next to her, don't let it be so cramped, just wipe her. Yes. She only spoke a few words, yes, just like that," said Adji when met at his home in the Jagakarsa area, South Jakarta, Saturday (16/8/2025).

"Wipe her, why is she already cold, why is it cold, the closer it gets to the feet the colder it gets, after dawn it started getting cold in the feet, that's when I started to feel anxious, sleep here, sleep here," Adji Darmaji continued.

1. Use the Breathing Aid

Communication became increasingly limited due to the heavy breathing. Mpok Alpa even had to use her phone to call the nurse because she could no longer speak much. Her husband explained how the breathing aid was constantly replaced to support his wife's life.

"Call the nurse, right? Nurse, she just talks using the phone, she said she shouldn't talk too much because she's afraid her breath will be disturbed again. Using the phone, calling the nurse, that's shortness of breath. Finally, the nurse replaced the device, gave her the biggest oxygen tank," he said.

2. Body Feels Cold

As seven in the morning approached, Mpok Alpa's anxiety intensified. Her body, which had felt cold, rejected the blanket provided, as if signaling that her time was drawing near. In that moment, Mpok Alpa uttered a sentence that shattered her husband's heart into pieces.

"Finally, at seven o'clock, it started, she was very anxious, like this again, back again, given a pillow, everything was already cold. By eight o'clock, this came off by itself, we gave her a blanket but she threw it away, we gave her a blanket and she tossed it aside, she didn't want to talk anymore, she only said, 'just take this off,' mama's breath is already here. It's already like that," Adji recounted.

3. Died in Embrace

At that moment, Adji held his wife's body tightly, trying to give her his final strength. He patiently guided Mpok Alpa to recite the declaration of faith, leading her to eternal rest.

"Hug. Sir, she is no longer strong. Hug, just follow, until laillahaillallah, until Allah, then close your eyes. It’s over," he said.

4. Efforts of the Medical Team

The medical team that arrived immediately took steps to ensure Mpok Alpa's condition. However, fate had other plans. The man who had spent a full month accompanying his wife in the hospital had to accept the reality that his soulmate was gone.

"The doctor said we will try, yes please doctor. Yes, let the medical team also know, I mean to ensure whether she is still here or not, it turns out she is indeed gone," he said resignedly.

5. The Deceased's Last Request

The doctor stated that Mpok Alpa passed away around eight in the morning. In the midst of panic and an extraordinary feeling of weakness, Adji clearly remembered his wife's last request the night before her passing.

"Around 8, around 8 something. Because I was also in a panic, I was weak, for a month I had only slept an hour or so at home, taking care of Mpok, my thoughts were solely on Mpok, just taking care of her, that night she kept calling, 'pa, pa', 'what is it, ma? what is it?', 'want me to rub her back'," he recalled.

6. Unforgettable Memories

That last moment became an unforgettable memory. Adji climbed onto the hospital bed to embrace and guide his wife for the last time, a testament to true love until the end of life.

"She wanted to pass away in my lap, I climbed onto the bed here, I hugged her, I guided her, she still wanted to follow until Allah, and then it was over," he concluded.
