Uya Kuya Reveals He Has Never Received Royalties from the Song 'Mimpi Terindah'

Kapanlagi.com - Uya Kuya, who is also known as a songwriter, expressed his concerns about the royalty system in Indonesia. He feels that the system is still unclear, causing many musicians to not receive their rights fairly.

When met at the South Jakarta Metro Police, Thursday (20/2/2025), Uya shared his experience regarding one of his most popular songs, Mimpi Terindah.

"Royalties, as a songwriter, yes, I agree that this royalty system should be given a clear framework," said Uya.

According to him, the song Mimpi Terindah, which once became a hit, did not give him any royalties at all. Meanwhile, his new songs do provide royalties, although the amount is not significant.

1. Important Role

"I created a song before called Mimpi Terindah, all sorts of things, that song of mine was popular, but until now I have never received anything. In fact, the last songs that were just released I actually received royalties, even if it was only a few hundred thousand," he explained.

He believes that songwriters have an important role in the music industry, and therefore they also deserve to receive fair royalties. Additionally, the continuity between songwriters and singers also needs to be considered.

"Songwriters indeed must have the right to receive their dues. But I also want there to be a clear system on how songwriters definitely need singers to perform their songs," said Uya.

Furthermore, Uya highlighted the role of institutions like LMKN (National Collective Management Institution) which is responsible for regulating the distribution of royalties. However, he questioned the clarity of the existing system.

"Yeah, now I believe my song is managed by those who handle royalties, LMKN, and so on. But if the creator themselves never receives anything, it means something is not right, right?" he asserted.

Uya hopes that the royalty system in Indonesia can be improved so that song creators do not feel disadvantaged. According to him, royalties should be received automatically without needing to be requested.

"Shouldn't have to ask. I should be given automatically. Contacted or whatever, right? We should have the rights that we get," he concluded.
