KPI Requests to Stop Glorifying and Amplifying Regarding Saipul Jamil's Release

Kapanlagi.com - The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) requests all television broadcasting institutions to refrain from amplifying and glorifying (exaggerating and creating the impression of celebration) the release of dangdut singer Saipul Jamil in their broadcasts. This request is due to the negative public sentiment regarding the release and the involvement of the person in several TV programs.

"We hope that all broadcasting institutions understand the sensitivity and ethical appropriateness of the public towards the case that has befallen the person and at the same time do not reopen the trauma experienced by the victim," said Deputy Chairman of the Central KPI, Mulyo Hadi Purnomo, in response to complaints and negative responses from the public regarding Saipul Jamil's release, Monday (6/9/2021) as quoted from the official KPI website.

KPI also pleads for broadcasting institutions to be more careful in airing content that involves illegal activities or goes against morality and norms such as (sexual deviations, prostitution, drugs, and other illegal acts) committed by artists or public figures.

"We hope that broadcasting institutions prioritize or orientate the educational aspects of the information conveyed so that similar incidents do not recur and the legal sanctions that the person has undergone are not perceived by the public as ordinary risks," said Mulyo.

1. The Comfort of the Community Must Be Considered

Mulyo added that individual rights should not be restricted, but public rights and comfort should also be considered because public frequencies should be utilized to the fullest extent for the interests and welfare (including comfort) of the community.

"Prioritizing individual rights while hurting the rights of the community is certainly not appropriate," he said.

Reflecting on several recurring incidents in similar cases, Mulyo stated that the ongoing revision of the 2012 P3SPS (Broadcasting Behavior Guidelines and Program Standards) by the KPI will be taken into consideration regarding explicit regulations on this matter in the revision of P3SPS.

"Currently, we are in the process of revising the P3SPS and are already listening to input from the public and stakeholders," Mulyo concluded.

Saipul Jamil was declared free on September 2, 2021. He was involved in a case of indecent acts towards a minor and bribing the clerk of the North Jakarta District Court, Rohadi, with Rp 250 million.
