The origin of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS is an adaptation of the novel Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard, which sold well in the American market. Due to the success of the novel, Marlene King worked hard with ABC Family (an American television channel) to turn the novel into a series that could attract many viewers. The success of this series in America is evident as it has presented three new series, including RAVENSWOOD, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: THE PERFECTIONISTS, and PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: ORIGINAL SIN. These three series were released consecutively from 2010 to 2017, and it is no wonder that this series was dubbed 'The Most Social TV Show in Television History' in America as it received over 256 million engagements on social media in 2016.

Based on the success of the series in America, the famous Indonesian director, Emil Heradi, dared to remake the series by collaborating with Viu Indonesia, Warner Bros International, and Television Production. Interestingly, this Indonesian version of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS is set in Bali, so viewers who watch it can experience a different atmosphere from this story. What is equally great is that this Indonesian version of the series has been broadcasted in 17 countries in Asia and Africa through the online platform VIU.

Unlike the original series, which had up to three sequels, the Indonesian version of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS only offers 10 episodes. Although, the director worked so hard to make this series look the same as the original. However, there are some parts that have been removed because they have to follow the culture in Asia, especially Indonesia. The location setting in this series is in a fictional city called Amerta located in Bali, Indonesia. The reason Bali was chosen as the main location setting in this series is to get a new atmosphere. How not, this series collaborates with the names Yuki Kato, Anya Geraldine, Eyka Farhana, Valerie Thomas, and Shindy Huang. These five beautiful women have to act together as friends with different characters. They are required to delve into the characters they play so that the audience can feel the chemistry between their friendship.

Yuki Kato plays Alissa Gabriella, a woman who knows all the secrets of her four friends, but none of her four friends know the secret held by Alissa. Anya Geraldine plays Hana, one of the women who is often teased by Alissa because of her overweight. Then Eyka Farhana, who plays Ema, a woman of Malaysian descent who lives in a religious family. PRETTY LITTLE LIARS tells the story of four college students whose friendship becomes strained when Alissa, the most influential person in their friendship, mysteriously disappears. One year later, Hana, Ema, Sabrina, and Aria become friends again, and each of them receives mysterious messages with the initial 'A' at the end of the message. The content of the message is a threat that will reveal the dark secrets held by the four friends.

The four women inform each other that they have been terrorized by 'A,' so they make a plan to uncover the person behind the 'A' initials who has threatened their lives. However, behind this mission, there will be conflicts between families and internal conflicts that the four young women must overcome. Although it may sound complex just by reading this brief synopsis, viewers will be guaranteed to be hooked once they see it for themselves.

3. Successfully Winning Asian Level Awards

It is a pride for Indonesia to have succeeded in adapting this American series. The Indonesian version of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS web series has been nominated for several awards at the Asian level. This series has won three nominations. At the Content Asia Awards 2020, PLL won the Best TV Series Adaptation in Asia category. Then, at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2020, PLL won another award in the Best Adaptation Program category. Not stopping there, PLL brought home another award at the 25th Asian Television Awards for the Best Adaptation Program category.

Thanks to the success of this adaptation series, the Indonesian version of PLL stars also received awards for their roles. Eyka Farhana won the Best Actress in a Leading Role award at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2020, while Mulan Guritno won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award. Jennifer Coppen, the singer of the PLL theme song, won the Best Theme Song - Secret category.

4. PRETTY LITTLE LIARS Indonesian Version Season 2

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS Indonesian version season 2 will soon be released to continue the story from the first PLL. It is known from one of the players and Indonesian celebgram, Anya Geraldine, who has uploaded a photo through her Instagram account that she is currently shooting for PLL. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, there will be changes in the cast for this second sequel. It's unfortunate because Eyka Farhana, one of the players from Malaysia, had to withdraw from the filming that had started on June 25, 2021. Due to the circumstances that require quarantine before the shooting process and she also has to star in a series in Malaysia, she had to cancel her contract for PLL Indonesian version season 2.

Don't be sad about Eyka Farhana's absence, there may be a replacement for the Malaysian actress prepared by the director.
