Author 'God, Allow Me to Become a Prostitute!' Doesn't Believe Hanung Bramantyo Wants to Adapt His Novel into a Film

Kapanlagi.com - The controversial novel titled God, Allow Me to Become a Prostitute by Muhidin M. Dahlan was first published in 2003. Twenty years later, a film version is presented under the banner of MVP Pictures, directed by Hanung Bramantyo with the title GOD, ALLOW ME TO SIN.

Muhidin admits that he doesn't believe Hanung wants to adapt his novel into a film. As the author, he himself had to hide for years because he couldn't face the anger of many opposing parties. What will happen when the film is widely released in theaters?

"When Hanung proposed this book, I said he was really brave. Because I thought it was just a love story. I realized after the first week my book was launched. What did I do? Yes, hide. I hid because I couldn't face such a large crowd. I felt like a persecuted communist," Dahlan said when met at Empire XXI, Yogyakarta, on Friday (1/12/2023).

1. Reasons for Changing the Title of the Novel and Film

In the film version produced by Raam Punjabi, the natural title change to TUHAN, IZINKAN AKU BERDOSA. Hanung Bramantyo chose this creative decision because there were many changes from the novel to the film.

"Why is the title different? Because we changed the ending. We just wiped it clean. That's why it's not fair to use the same title. The novel and the film cannot be simply copied and pasted, so it's better to separate and differentiate them. I try to respect the literary work," said Hanung on the same occasion.

2. Jokowi Appreciates Democracy and Openness

Hanung Bramantyo revealed that the idea of adapting this novel into a film came up during the pandemic. When he reread the book, he felt that it could be adapted in the present time.

"I had the intention to make a film during the pandemic but didn't know what to do, then I reread this book. I thought it was suitable to be filmed now, the situation also supports it. President Jokowi appreciates democracy and openness, and organizations have been restrained. So, this is the time for us to speak personally!" Hanung emphasized.
