Rio admitted that he has his own challenges in playing the character Alif in the film that will start airing on November 27, 20205. He hasn't even watched the final result of the film because he is nervous.
"Yes, the challenge might be because this story is something that almost all Indonesian people have grown up with. We know, we know Malin Kundang was cursed to become stone, a disobedient child," said the husband of Atiqah Hasiholan.
"And to play the character Alif without trying to replace Malin Kundang and to carry the story from start to finish, that has been my biggest challenge. And until this moment, I'm still nervous because I haven't watched the result yet. I haven't watched it," he continued.
Rio Dewanto then mentioned the relevance of the film LEGENDA MALIN KUNDANG to real life today. The 38-year-old actor talked about intergenerational trauma.
"And how relevant is it to today's life? One of the issues raised is intergenerational trauma. The trauma brought by our parents. They experience things that traumatize them, and then, unconsciously, they pass it down to their children, who then also pass it down to their children. So that's intergenerational trauma, and that's the issue we are trying to address now," he said.
Meanwhile, Faradina Mufti mentioned that she plays the role of a wife living in a warm family. However, she suddenly has to experience a change in her life after her mother-in-law comes into her life.
"Well, in this case, because Nadine is a wife who, at first, we know she lives in a warm family, a happy family, this is the goal of every family. But if we look at the trailer, she suddenly says that she has never met your parents since she got to know you. That's actually where the turning point is, like, what happened in this family?" said Faradina Mufti.
THE DARK LEGEND OF MALIN KUNDANG has a psychological thriller genre, different from the original folktale from West Sumatra. This film, directed by Rafki Hidayat Kevin Rahardjo, has been showing since November 27, 2025.
