Trying Something Different, Director Timo Tjahjanto Presents a Male Ghost to Scare the Audience in 'BEFORE THE DEVIL TAKES AYAT 2'

Kapanlagi.com - The film BEFORE THE DEVIL TAKES, released in 2018, successfully brought two creepy characters portrayed by Karina Suwandi and Ruth Marini. Now in its sequel titled BEFORE THE DEVIL TAKES AYAT 2, another creepy character is presented by a male actor.

The selection of a male as a ghost is rare in Indonesian cinema, which tends to make women the object of terror. However, as the director, screenwriter, and producer, Timo Tjahjanto wanted to bring something different.

"In this second film, I want to go further. The current tendency in horror is to focus on female ghosts, but in my opinion, it's not only women who can be terrifying as ghosts. That's why I created the character Ayub, who starts off as a monster when alive and becomes a terrifying character in death," Timo revealed during an interview at Senayan City, Central Jakarta, on Friday (21/2/2020).

1. Shooting for 30 Days

Timo Tjahjanto went through a shooting process for SEBELUM IBLIS MENJEMPUT AYAT 2 for approximately 30 days. It could have been done in two weeks, but apparently, some scenes couldn't be done in just one day because they required careful technicalities.

"Total shooting for 30 days, for Indonesian horror standards, this could be the longest as usually it's 22 or 25 days. For this film, I don't want it to be just hiding scenes in the darkness, I want more. There are fire scenes, the main character enters Ayub's world which is like a terrible illusion. That's why we feel brave to try more, not just shooting for two weeks," explained the husband of actress Sigi Wimala.

SEBELUM IBLIS MENJEMPUT AYAT 2 brings back Chelsea Islan as Alfie, a character who is still alive from the first film. This time, she is dragged into the supernatural terror that befalls a group of orphaned children.
