Debating, Are the Toy Characters in 'TOY STORY' Immortal or Can They Die?

TOY STORY was also the first cartoon film to apply CGI technology in its production in 1995. CGI, or Computer Generated Imagery, is the process of applying 3D computer graphics to generate animated images.

Until now, the TOY STORY animated film itself has 4 installments. Starting from TOY STORY (1995), TOY STORY 2 (1999), TOY STORY 3 (2010), and TOY STORY 4 (2019). All of them have good and unpredictable storylines. It is not surprising that many fans have been debating the ending of the story for decades.

One of the longest-standing debates is about the fate of the characters in this film. As we know, most of the characters in this film are toys that can think and even talk. The question that becomes a debate is whether the toys are immortal or can they die?

Questioning whether a toy can live or die may seem strange to those who do not know the story of this film, but it is intentionally brought up by the creator of Toy Story. The premise of all the series begins when the toys are first produced in the factory, then when the toys are owned by children and become part of their collection. These toys are inspired to have feelings, thoughts, and can speak like normal humans in the form of physical toys.

Not only can they speak, but these toys can also faint. Unlike humans who are allowed to evolve and grow into adults, the toys remain trapped in the same body, with the same thoughts and motivations. Sometimes it leads to evil, bitterness, and resentment, as happened to the antagonistic characters in this series, Stinky Pete the Prospector and Lotso the Bear.

Because Toy Story fans include all age groups, there are some long-time fans who have speculated about the nature and feelings experienced by these toys. Does the fact that characters like Woody and Buzz who have plastic bodies and cannot age mean that they will technically be immortal?

Recently, this question was answered by Lee Unkrich, the writer of Toy Story 3, through his Twitter account. Unkrich's answer points to the resolution of that debate. "They live as long as they exist." But what if they were really destroyed? Say, in an incinerator? "The End," wrote Unkrich on his Twitter account. The toys are indeed immortal and cannot be destroyed. Thus, the time will come when Woody and his friends will finally meet their end, even if they never physically age.

Of course, such profound philosophical questions have never been the reason behind the creation of TOY STORY. While adult fans may wonder about the logic behind the creation of its main theme throughout the series. Despite all that, there are many lessons that can be learned from this film, such as the mutual respect between children and their toys, the growth of emotional attachment, and friends who are forced to leave us as time goes by, and certainly many other lessons that can be taken.
