Meg 2: The Trench is a continuation of the story from the first film. The setting takes place several years after Jonas Taylor defeated the megalodon shark, also known as Meg. 

The ending of The Meg (2018) shows Jonas and Suyin (Li Bingbing) stopping the terror of Meg, which killed many of the Mana One crew. Jonas finally kills Meg by attacking the prehistoric shark with submarine wreckage and stabbing its eye.

The final scene of the first film indicates that there is still potential for other Meg species to appear. This then becomes the storyline bridge to the sequel The Meg (2018).

2. The Existence of Suyin Zhang

One of the changes in this sequel is related to the fate of Suyin Zhang. Jonas Taylor is now responsible for taking care of Meiying (Sophia Cai), who is growing up.

The absence of Suyin Zhang leads to the emergence of her brother, Jiuming (Wu Jing), as a new character. He becomes the only relative of Meiying who appears since Suyin is not there and Minway Zhang (Winston Chau) died in the first film.

Jiuming is a new character who appears in Meg 2: The Trench. He is Suyin Zhang's brother and Meiying's uncle who finally emerges and gets involved in Mana One.
