TURNING RED will tell the story of a young girl named Mei Lee who, when she is excited or anxious, turns into a giant red panda. Set in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Mei must struggle with teenage struggles, her condition, and her parents.
There have been 2 cast members announced to star in the film. They are Rosalie Chiang, a newcomer to Hollywood as Mei Lee, and Sandra Oh, who previously appeared in INVINCIBLE, as Mei Lee's overprotective mother.
The director of this film is Domee Shi, who is working on a feature film for the first time with Pixar. Domee Shi previously directed BAO, a Pixar short film that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Not only that, Domee Shi is the first female director to direct a Pixar short film and will be the first female director for a Pixar feature film.
TURNING RED will be the first Pixar film set in Canada. Perhaps because the director, Domee Shi, herself is Canadian, as is Sandra Oh who was also born in Canada.
