The South Korean production company, Barunson E&A, widely known for the success of the Oscar-winning film, PARASITE; announced a strategic partnership with the rising Indonesian production house, Imajinari. This move is part of Barunson's global expansion, particularly in managing the international remake rights of Imajinari's standout works.
Barunson will hold the international remake rights for three titles from Imajinari, namely the horror comedy film AGAK LAEN, its upcoming sequel, and the yet-to-be-released dark comedy film, TINGGAL MENINGGAL. This agreement marks a strategic shift for Barunson from merely co-productions and international sales to licensing remake rights with a particular focus on the rapidly growing Southeast Asian market.
Imajinari itself is a studio founded in 2021 by comedian and director Ernest Prakasa and manager Dipa Andika under the auspices of Hahaha Corp. Despite being newly established, Imajinari has captured public attention through its debut film, NGERI-NGERI SEDAP (2022), which successfully garnered 2.8 million viewers and became the fourth highest-grossing local film of that year.
Quoted from Variety, Ernest Prakasa expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration, "Our philosophy has always been about telling original stories in surprising ways that entertain audiences. It's fascinating to see our creativity reinterpreted in the form of remakes in various countries."
CEO of Barunson E&A, Yoonhee Choi, stated that Imajinari is a studio with a unique ability to convey stories that resonate with everyday life. "We see Imajinari as a studio that excels in telling stories about family, love, and human relationships with a fresh and entertaining perspective. We are excited to introduce their IP to a global audience."
