Always Ask for Permission When MORFEM Performs the Song by rumahsakit, Jimi Multhazam: The Morality Is Like That

The band MORFEM is known to have re-released the song Kuning, which was previously popularized by the band rumahsakit. This song was written by the guitarist of rumahsakit, Mark Ricardo Nayoan aka Mrky. Jimi Multhazam, the vocalist of MORFEM, emphasizes that he still respects the original creator of the song. He ensures that this remake project still involves Mrky and the members of rumahsakit.

"It's like I'm remaking the song Kuning. I still refer to Mrky as the creator of this song. Mrky is from rumahsakit, and even from other projects related to Kuning, I will still be in direct contact, still with the kids (members) of rumahsakit, the morality is like that," said Jimi Multhazam in the Pondok Labu area, South Jakarta, Wednesday (13/3/2025).

Moreover, every time he performs the song Kuning on stage, Jimi always asks for permission from Mrky. He considers this as a form of respect for the song's creator.

"(Permission to Mrky) is definitely there. Mrky and rumahsakit are indeed long-time colleagues. So I even mention, when on stage, 'this is a tribute to the best indipop band', like that, so the people (audience) immediately know who it's for," said Jimi.

Furthermore, Jimi also shared his views on the royalty system in the music industry. As an indie musician not tied to a label, he admitted he has never dealt with royalty issues."Maybe this mess happens when a pop singer uses another arranger or composer. But in my case, I actually own my own copyright. From my perspective, royalties are more focused on the songwriter," said Jimi.

In his creative process, Jimi always ensures that the copyright and royalties of the songs are shared fairly. He shares the proceeds from his work with the band members who are directly involved.

"For me, the results of my songs will be spread to several people who are directly involved, my band members. And I still do that until now. So I still share with Kubil, I still share with Pandu, and with Freddy who is still active," he explained.

As a musician, Jimi admits to having his own way of creating songs. He often draws inspiration from guitar chord progressions, drum beats, or basslines played by his bandmates.

"Sometimes I get inspired by the progressive chords from my guitarist, or from the beat of my drummer, or even from the bassline. That's how I see it," said Jimi.

Jimi reiterated that the remake project of the song Kuning still respects its original creator. He wants to maintain a good relationship with the hospital and ensure that all processes are conducted transparently.

"It's like I'm remaking the song Kuning. I still refer to Marki as the creator of this song. I will still maintain direct contact with Marki, the hospital, and even with other projects related to Kuning, still with the kids from the hospital, morally that's how it is," said Jimi.
