How to Perform Tayammum Completely with Conditions, Intentions - Prayers

Well, ablution usually requires water. So, what if there is no water? If there is no water, Muslims can purify themselves with tayammum.

Tayammum is similar to ablution, aiming to remove impurities, so after doing it, you can immediately perform prayers or read the Quran. But how do you do tayammum? Because tayammum is rarely done, so it's understandable that not many people understand how to do it.

1. Conditions Allowed for Tayammum

Before learning the procedures for tayammum, it is better for you to first understand the conditions that allow tayammum. The most fundamental condition that allows us to perform tayammum is when we cannot find water around us.

In addition, tayammum is also allowed when we are sick or traveling. The conditions allowed for tayammum are explained in the Quran, Surah An-Nisa verse 43, which means as follows:

And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands.

Meaning, if outside of the mentioned conditions, Muslims are not allowed to perform tayammum. Therefore, it is still obligatory to perform ablution before praying.

2. Things to Consider When Performing Tayammum

In addition to the above conditions, there are also several things that Muslims should know about tayammum. Because these things will affect what is right and wrong in performing tayammum. Here are some things to consider when performing tayammum:

1. Tayammum can only be done when it is time for prayer.

2. If the reason is that there is no water, then there must be an effort to find water beforehand.

3. The soil or dust that will be used for tayammum must be clean and soft. It should not be wet, mixed with lime, stones, and other impurities.

4. Tayammum only serves as a substitute for ablution and ritual bathing. Tayammum cannot remove impurities.

5. Tayammum can only be used for one obligatory prayer. Therefore, it cannot be used for performing voluntary prayers after the obligatory prayer.

6. The procedure for tayammum is different from the purification of body parts during ablution.

7. Things that invalidate ablution also invalidate tayammum.

3. Reading the Intention of Tayammum

Similar to ablution, tayammum also has its own reading of intention. Here is the reading of intention to perform tayammum:

NAWAITUT TAYAMMUMA LISSTIBAAHATISH SHALAATI FARDLOL LILLAAHI TA'AALAA

Meaning: I intend to perform tayammum in order to pray, fardlu for the sake of Allah ta ‘ala.

4. Procedure of Tayammum

Unlike ablution which uses water, tayammum is performed using soil or dust. Here is the procedure of performing tayammum, quoted from Dream.co.id:

1. Prepare dusty soil or an object with a dusty surface. Make sure the dust is clean, and according to the provisions that can be used for purification by tayammum.

2. Then face the qibla.

3. Then say bismillah, and then wipe both palms on the surface of the soil or dusty object with the fingers of the hands closed together.

4. The next step of tayammum, blow on the palms of the hands gently and then wipe them on the face, while silently reading the intention of tayammum.

5. Place the palms of the hands on the soil or dusty object again, but this time with the fingers spread apart.

6. Place the left palm on the back of the right hand, making sure that the fingertips of one hand do not exceed the fingertips of the other hand.

7. Wipe the left palm on the back of the right arm up to the elbow. Then, turn the left palm inside the right arm, and wipe it up to the wrist.

8. Then, wipe the inner part of the left thumb on the back of the right thumb. Next, do the same on the left hand.

9. The last step of tayammum, join both palms together and rub them between the fingers.

5. Prayer After Tayammum

Just like ablution, after performing tayammum, it is recommended for Muslims to also recite a prayer. Here is the prayer recitation after tayammum:

Asyhadu Allaa Ilaaha Illalloohu Wandahuu Laa. Syariika Lahu Wa Asyhadu Anna Muhammadan 'Abduhuuwa Rosuuluhuu, Alloohummaj'alnii Minat Tawwaabiina Waj'alnii Minal Mutathohhiriina.

Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who are purified.

Those are various important aspects of how to perform tayammum that Muslims should know. With that, the absence of water does not become an obstacle to performing obligatory worship.
