Intentions and Procedures for Friday Prayer, Also Know Its Sunnahs

Friday prayers are indeed a special practice. This is because Friday prayers have the same legal status as obligatory prayers, which is obligatory for every individual. 1. Virtues of Friday Prayer

Although only performed once a week, Friday prayer has extraordinary virtues. It is not surprising that this prayer has become a practice that is prohibited to be abandoned by Muslim men. Some of the virtues of this prayer are as follows.

1) Erasing Sins

Friday prayer is believed to be a practice that erases past sins. This is explained in one of the hadiths which states:

"Among the five daily prayers, between one Friday prayer and the next, it can erase sins between them as long as no major sins are committed" (HR.Muslim).

2) Obtaining great rewards

In addition to being forgiven for past sins, Friday prayer also becomes a source of rewards for Muslims who perform it. As stated in the hadith:

"Whoever takes a bath on Friday like the bath of janabah, then goes to the mosque, it is as if he has sacrificed a camel. Whoever comes at the second opportunity, it is as if he has sacrificed a cow." Whoever comes on the third occasion, it is as if he has sacrificed a horned goat. Whoever comes on the fourth occasion, it is as if he has sacrificed a chicken. And whoever comes on the fifth occasion, it is as if he has sacrificed an egg. And when the imam comes out (to deliver the sermon), the angels come to listen to the remembrance (of the sermon)" (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim).

3) Every step taken to perform the Friday prayer will be considered equal to fasting and praying for a year.

This virtue is mentioned in a hadith, which says:

"Whoever takes a bath on Friday, washing his head and other body parts, then goes early or goes and finds the first sermon, then approaches the imam, listens to the sermon and remains silent, then every step he takes is counted as fasting and praying for a year" (Narrated by Tirmidhi).

2. Mandatory Conditions and Validity of Friday Prayer

Just like any other worship or practice, Friday prayer also has a number of conditions that must be fulfilled. Conditions that are overlooked or not done can reduce the reward of Friday prayer or even invalidate it. The conditions for Friday prayer are divided into two types, namely obligatory conditions and valid conditions.

Obligatory conditions are very important in the worship of Friday prayer. Because it will determine the value of the worship performed. The obligatory conditions in the worship of Friday prayer include:

1) A person performing Friday prayer must be a Muslim.

2) Puberty or capable of distinguishing between good and bad things.

3) A person who is obliged to perform Friday prayer is those who must have intellect, or not in a state of mental illness or unconsciousness.

4) Free and not in a state of slavery.

5) In a healthy condition.

6) Not currently traveling.

Meanwhile, the valid conditions for Friday prayer are things that must be fulfilled. Valid conditions will determine whether the Friday prayer performed is accepted or not. The valid conditions for Friday prayer include:

1) It is performed on Friday when entering the Dhuhr time.

2) Friday prayer is performed in congregation (minimum 40 people) in one area, such as a village, city, and so on.

3) Each congregant of Friday prayer must fulfill the obligatory conditions of Friday prayer as mentioned earlier.

4) Before performing the two rak'ah prayer, it is preceded by two sermons and also reciting the pillars of the sermon.

5) Friday prayer is performed after the preacher finishes delivering two sermons.

3. Intention for Friday Prayer

Intention is very important in performing a worship or good deed. Intention can determine whether an act is accepted or not. The same goes for the intention of Friday prayer, which is one of the pillars of Friday prayer. To obtain perfect rewards, the intention must be recited wholeheartedly and sincerely.

As for the intention for the position of the Imam in Friday prayer, it is as follows:

USHALLI FARDAL JUM'ATI ADA'AN MUSTAQBILAL QIBLATI IMAMAN LILLAHI TA'ALA.

Meaning:

"I intend to perform 2 units of Friday prayer facing the Qibla as the Imam for the sake of Allah Ta'ala."

Meanwhile, the intention for the position of the follower (Makmum) in Friday prayer includes:

USHALLI FARDAL JUM'ATI ADA'AN MUSTAQBILAL QIBLATI MAKMUMAN LILLAHI TA'ALA.

Meaning:

"I intend to perform 2 units of Friday prayer facing the Qibla as a follower (Makmum) for the sake of Allah Ta'ala."

4. Friday Prayer Procedure

Friday Prayer is performed at the time of Dhuhr. Friday Prayer consists of two rak'ahs. In addition, Friday Prayer has a procedure that is not much different from other prayers. However, in its implementation, Friday Prayer is preceded by a sermon delivered by the preacher.

As a whole, the procedure for Friday Prayer is as follows:

1) Reciting the intention for Friday Prayer

2) Takbiratul Ikhram

3) Reciting the opening supplication

4) Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah

5) Reciting a short surah, followed by takbir

19) Reciting the final tashahhud

20) Offering the salutation

Friday prayer is indeed a worship that gives many rewards. In addition to the prayer itself, Muslims can also earn additional rewards by following the sunnahs that can be done before and while being in the mosque. The sunnahs of Friday prayer are as follows:

1) Sunnahs Before Going to the Mosque

- Take a clean bath

- Trim nails and mustache

- Wear clean and neat clothes, and use fragrance

- Enter the mosque by reciting the prayer for entering the mosque:

ALLAHUMMAF TAHLII ABWAABA ROHMATIK

Meaning:

"O Allah, open the doors of Your mercy for me."

2) Sunnahs while being in the mosque

- Perform the sunnah prayer of greeting the mosque (tahiyatul masjid)

- Sit in seclusion (i'tikaf) while reading the Quran, doing remembrance (dhikr), or sending blessings (salawat)

- Stop the remembrance or other recitation when the khateeb delivers the Friday sermon

- Perform the sunnah prayer after Friday prayer (ba'diyah)
