Kapanlagi.com - The Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF) released a research entitled "The Role of Digital Platforms in the Development of MSMEs in Indonesia" on Thursday, January 25, 2024. This research shows the positive impact of using digital platforms on the development of MSME businesses in Indonesia.

In general, this research reveals that the use of digital platforms in business can help MSME actors increase business turnover and create new job opportunities.

Despite these positive impacts, MSME actors in the field often face challenges in optimizing the use of digital platforms.

Some of the main challenges are intense competition among business actors in digital platforms (96.46%) and a lack of workforce skills in using digital platforms (83.46%).

In line with Indonesia's Digital Literacy Status in 2023

This data is in line with Indonesia's Digital Literacy Status in 2023, the result of a survey collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) and Katadata Insight Center (KIC). The total value of Indonesia's digital literacy index in 2023 is only at level 3.65. This figure is still relatively low to achieve the maximum index target at level 5.

To help improve the digital skills of domestic MSME actors, several e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, Lazada, and Tokopedia actively organize various MSME training programs. These training programs aim to help MSMEs move up the ladder and even reach the global market.

Through these trainings, MSMEs can learn the most basic topics such as creating an online store, managing an online store, increasing orders using various features and campaign programs, and how to reach buyers abroad.

The INDEF research reveals several examples of MSME training programs organized by e-commerce platforms, including Blibli University, MSME Campus (Export) Shopee, Tokopedia Quick Seller School, Tiktok Seller University, and Lazada University.

The INDEF research shows that 34.65% of total MSME respondents are aware of information about MSME training program initiatives organized by e-commerce platforms.

The INDEF research notes that the MSME training program organized by Shopee is the most well-known program among MSMEs compared to other e-commerce MSME training programs.

The three most well-known MSME training programs by MSMEs are MSME Campus (Export) Shopee (25.98%), Shopee Export Program (17.32%), and Tokopedia Quick Seller School (6.30%).

The Importance of Collaboration between the Government and Digital Companies

In the INDEF public discussion event to present the research results, Expert Staff for Inter-Institutional Relations, Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Riza Damanik also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and existing digital companies to continue providing assistance in driving MSME digitalization programs.

"Collaborative initiatives with companies such as Shopee, Lazada, and others are already underway. We also encourage them to be more active and involved in providing assistance, in addition to what the government has already done. We hope that their engagement can also be greater," explained Riza Damanik.

Efforts to improve the digital skills of MSME actors indeed require cooperation from all parties, including the government, the industrial sector, and the wider community.

The presence of these digital MSME training programs organized by e-commerce platforms can certainly help the government promote MSME digitalization. Based on data from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, the government is currently targeting 50% digital MSMEs by 2030.
