UB Students Suspected of Corona Do Not Meet Criteria for Having Contact with Confirmed Positive Covid-19

Kapanlagi.com - Residents of Malang are discussing a Universitas Brawijaya (UB) student in Malang who is suspected of having Corona. The patient is currently being treated at Saiful Anwar Hospital (RSSA) in Malang. After examination, the student does not meet the criteria for having had contact with confirmed positive Covid-19.

Nevertheless, the campus is taking steps to prevent the spread of Covid-19. UB Malang Rector, Nuhfil Hanani, stated that the student is under the supervision of medical personnel at the hospital and it is still uncertain whether they are infected with Covid-19.

"Because they do not meet the criteria for having contact with a confirmed positive person or being in an affected area," said Nuhfil Hanani at Brawijaya University (UB) Malang, on Saturday (14/3).

Previously, there were rumors circulating about a UB Malang student being treated for suspected Covid-19. The rumor of corona suspect arose because the student's father died allegedly due to Covid-19.

However, the test results on the student's father have actually been declared negative. Likewise, the wife who took care of the deceased was declared healthy and not infected with Covid-19.

"We don't know why the story became sensational, but we still need to be cautious," he said.

Nuhfil emphasized that until now, Malang City and its surroundings have not been indicated as areas affected by Covid-19. However, the campus is taking precautionary and anticipatory measures regarding the incident.

"Industrial Engineering is temporarily isolated, because there is no certainty. It's a joke that his son is now sick, but his wife who takes care of him is not, and his father himself is not indicated to have Covid-19," he said.

The campus will disinfect or sterilize the Industrial Engineering Department building of the Faculty of Engineering for the time being.

UB has formed a Task Force (Satgas) for the prevention of the spread of the corona virus, as stated in a letter from the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Culture regarding the prevention of the spread of Covid-19. The Task Force, which is also formed at other campuses, will conduct socialization, education, promotion, and activities to prevent the spread of Covid-19 to the UB Academic Community about how to prevent and control the spread of Covid-19.

"We ask all Academic Community members to remain calm and carry out activities and self-awareness in accordance with the established procedures," he said.

For the time being, academic activities on campus will be replaced with an online system, although it will still be discussed in a coordination meeting to be held as soon as possible. Meanwhile, only the Faculty of Engineering has issued a circular letter and it will later be standardized by the Rector.

"It is not true that learning activities are abolished, what is true is that the method is changed. We will coordinate, and on Monday the steps of UB will be announced. To ensure uniformity between faculties, it is recommended to use online temporarily," he said.

However, Nuhfil asked students not to return to their hometowns even if the online system is implemented. Because besides being temporary, Malang has been confirmed to be safe and it would be problematic if students return to their respective provinces that have been infected.

Meanwhile, Aurick Yudha Nagara, Chairman of the UB Corona Virus Spread Prevention Task Force, informed that the condition of the hospitalized student has started to improve. Aurick also emphasized that the criteria for history were not fulfilled, because it was confirmed that there was no close contact with the patient, besides not traveling from the affected area of Covid19. 

"Oxygen use has been reduced and can already play with a mobile phone. But there is a clinical condition that the person concerned is being treated and is currently in the stage of his illness," he said.

For this week, UB is scheduled to hold the Final Semester Exam (UTS) and follow up with the Bachelor Graduation soon. The campus is still going to hold 

UB students' own calendar this week will hold the Final Semester Exam (UTS) and Bachelor Graduation soon. Meanwhile, the decision for its implementation will be announced after the coordination meeting on Monday (16/3) tomorrow.
