Understanding the Meaning of Tawakkul in Islam, Also Know Its Virtues

From its origin, tawakkul comes from the Arabic word tawakkul which means 'to surrender' or 'to be patient'. However, the word tawakkul has been absorbed into the Indonesian language, so it can be spoken, written, and used as it is today. In the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), the meaning of tawakkul is to submit oneself to the will of Allah SWT; to believe wholeheartedly in Allah SWT.

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the meaning of tawakkul is a praiseworthy attitude where one places their trust in Allah SWT. In this case, surrendering to Allah SWT includes various efforts to attain goodness, both in this world and in the hereafter. A Muslim who practices tawakkul must be able to wholeheartedly surrender all matters they face to Allah SWT.

Tawakkul is often mistakenly equated with resignation. This view is not entirely correct. The fact is, in practicing tawakkul, one must still make their best effort. Therefore, they should not simply hand over everything they face to Allah SWT without making any effort or struggle.

Because fundamentally, Allah commands all His people to make an effort while relying on Him. A Muslim who practices tawakkul truly places their last hope for the best results of their hard work in Allah SWT. Some even believe that someone who moves their body to make an effort also shows their obedience to Allah SWT's command.

By making their best effort and sincerely placing their trust in Allah, surely Allah will facilitate every matter they face.

3. The Virtue of Tawakkul

As one of the commendable attitudes in Islamic teachings, the meaning of tawakkul cannot be underestimated. Tawakkul is believed to have several virtues that are beneficial for a Muslim who practices it. Some of the virtues of tawakkul according to Islamic views are as follows.

1) Obtaining sufficiency from Allah

A person who practices tawakkul is guaranteed to receive sufficiency from Allah SWT. This is because a person who practices tawakkul has surrendered themselves to Allah. Therefore, they will believe that Allah SWT has guaranteed sustenance for His people. This virtue is mentioned in Surah At-Talaq verse 6 which states:

"And He will provide for him from sources he never could imagine. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him." Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent."

2) Increasing Faith

As mentioned earlier, tawakkul is one of the aspects of faith for a Muslim. This is stated in Surah Al-Maidah verse 23 which states:

"Two men among those who feared [Allah] had been granted inspiration. They said, 'March forth upon them through the entrance of the gate. For when you have entered it, you will be predominant. And upon Allah rely, if you should be believers.'"

3) Obtaining the goodness of both the worldly life and the Hereafter

The third virtue of tawakkul for Muslims is that they will obtain goodness in both the worldly life and the Hereafter. This is mentioned in Surah An-Nahl verses 41-42 which mean:

"And [recall] the one who fled for Allah after he was oppressed. We will surely grant him a good place [of return] in this world; and indeed, the Hereafter is greater in rank and greater in excellence. If they only knew, those who have patience and rely upon their Lord."

4) Protection from the temptations of Satan

Another virtue of tawakkul is that it protects a Muslim from the temptations of Satan. Because, Allah SWT will not allow Satan to approach those who believe and surrender to Him. This virtue is mentioned in Surah An Nahl verse 99, which means:

"Indeed, Satan has no influence over those who believe and rely on their Lord."
