Ammar Zoni's Legal Counsel Doubts the Witnesses in the Prosecutor's Trial

Ammar Zoni is back in court regarding the alleged drug abuse case that occurred within the detention center. In this trial, the Public Prosecutor (JPU) presented five witnesses consisting of two prison officers and three police members.

However, Ammar Zoni's legal counsel believes that the testimonies do not have strong legal standing. Jon Mathias, as Ammar Zoni's legal counsel, expressed his doubts about the quality of the witnesses presented in the trial.

The lawyer assessed that there were many irregularities that emerged during the proof process in front of the panel of judges. According to him, the witness statements were insufficient to further implicate his client.

"Yes, if the explanation is that the quality of the witnesses is inadequate, the evidentiary value is, in our opinion, lacking. Because many do not know. The key witness, as mentioned earlier, was from the prison side. Automatically, the one conducting the search also did not have a letter of assignment, and there were no witnesses, no minutes of the event; this is legally flawed according to our opinion," said Jon Mathias at the Central Jakarta District Court on Wednesday (18/12/2025).

In addition to the administrative issues of the search, Jon also highlighted the role of witnesses from the police. He assessed that the police officers present did not know the origin of the evidence because they did not participate in the initial search process in the cell.

"So it is doubted, they only know that the item has been handed over at the place. So it is not searching inside, so that does not strengthen it, right? Moreover, there are allegations of torture, so this needs to be investigated," he said.

The legal representatives believe there are indications of procedural violations or SOP breaches committed by the officers during the arrest and search of Ammar Zoni. Jon Mathias emphasized that if there are human rights violations, then all investigation results could be declared legally invalid.

"This means that the minutes, which were made under duress and torture, are already a violation of SOP and also a violation of the Police Chief's regulation regarding human rights. If this is proven later, it means everything is legally flawed," Jon asserted.

Jon Mathias even explicitly stated that the credibility of the testimonies from the witnesses presented by the public prosecutor that day was very low. This is due to the absence of direct evidence linking the evidence to his client.

"The witnesses from the prison themselves searched and found no evidence that the items came directly from Ammar. Right? And also, there is no official report either. So what now? It could be that the items were placed there by someone else. Ha, so in our opinion, the testimony right now is worth zero," concluded Jon Mathias.
