The divorce trial of Baim Wong and Paula Verhoeven has finally reached a final decision. Of all the demands made by Paula in her counterclaim, the panel of judges only granted a small portion. Paula, who initially demanded a total of Rp4.4 billion, only received Rp1 billion as mut'ah from Baim.
"Yes, the panel of judges only granted mut'ah of Rp1 billion. This was decided based on many considerations," said Suryana, Public Relations of the South Jakarta Religious Court, when met at the South Jakarta Religious Court on Wednesday (16/4/2025).
According to Suryana, Paula's claim includes iddah maintenance for three months amounting to Rp600 million, moderate maintenance for eight months amounting to Rp800 million, mut'ah of Rp3 billion, as well as child support of Rp80 million per month plus education costs and daily needs.
However, in its ruling, the judge stated that Paula was proven to have committed nusyuz or a violation of her obligations as a wife. Based on this legal foundation, the requests for iddah and moderate maintenance were automatically denied.
"Yes, because under the provisions of the Compilation of Islamic Law Article 149 letter (b), a wife who is declared nusyuz is not entitled to iddah and moderate maintenance," Suryana continued.
Nevertheless, Paula still retains the right to mut'ah as a form of final respect from the husband to the divorced wife. The judge decided that the amount of mut'ah given by Baim was Rp1 billion, far from the Rp3 billion requested by the respondent.
The value was decided based on considerations of Baim's financial capability, the level of reasonableness, and the income proven in the hearing through witnesses and documents from Baim's company.
"Yes, there are many aspects to consider. But the most determining factors are ability and appropriateness," said Suryana. The mut'ah payment is required to be made before the divorce declaration hearing is held, which will take place after the decision has legal force. Until now, it is not known whether Paula will appeal the outcome of the decision. /aal
