Dian Sastrowardoyo revealed that her character as Dasiyah in GADIS KRETEK is considered a difficult character for her to portray. She has to play the role of Dasiyah, whose character is the opposite of her own.
"Actually, for me, Jeng Yah or Dasiyah's personality is one of the most challenging characters I have ever played in my career. Why? Because I feel that Jeng Yah's character is different from Dian's. Dian is very transparent, I am expressive, and when I speak, I am animated. Jeng Yah is quiet and it's really tiring to hold back," she explained as quoted from TS Media's YouTube channel.
"For this story, I really made an effort to approach this character. I sacrificed a lot. I didn't meet my cycling friends for six months because Dini (the director) didn't allow it. 'Can you please stop meeting your friends from South Jakarta for a while?,'" she continued.

In terms of sports, the beautiful 41-year-old artist has changed several types of sports that she has been practicing for a long time. Dian is not recommended to do sports with a fast rhythm.
"'Stop all sports with a fast pace, stop cycling, stop running, can I still play tennis just for fun, stop it?' Why, Dini, because it has various impacts. You have to glide through life, is that right," she explained.

In order to play the role of Dasiyah or Jeng Yah, Dian followed all the director's requests, including changing her exercise routine. She replaced it with sports that are more suitable for Jeng Yah.
"So I immediately stopped all of that, the only sports I do now are Javanese dance and meditation, don't you think I'm dead. This ambitious person... disappeared," she explained.

Not only that, to delve into her role in GADIS KRETEK, Dian made a sacrifice by not using her mobile phone at home because there was no electronic media in the 1960s. She also got used to listening to music that suited the era of Dasiyah.
"At home, I don't use a mobile phone, don't listen to the radio, don't listen to modern music at all, for like a year. When I'm alone, I only read my entertainment books and listen to classical music, Javanese gamelan music, and keroncong from the Ismail Marzuki era," said the mother of two.
