Betrand Peto Remembers His Late Grandfather Who Always Took Pride in His Voice in Front of Everyone

Behind the deep sorrow, Betrand Peto holds a treasure trove of unforgettable sweet memories with his late grandfather, Hendrik Lo. For Onyo, his affectionate nickname, his grandfather, whom he usually calls Yeye, is not just a parental figure but also one of his biggest supporters who always makes him feel special.

When asked to share his sweetest memories, Onyo immediately mentioned two things that deeply touched his heart. Those moments are their first holiday together and his father Sarwendah's struggle to give him a new identity. Read more below!

"An unforgettable sweet memory is when I went on vacation to Bali with Yeye, the first vacation with Yeye, and then he gave me my Chinese name," said Betrand Peto when met at the Grand Heaven funeral home, West Jakarta, on Wednesday (23/7/2025).

The story behind his Chinese name, Huang Sheng Bao, is one of the greatest proofs of love from his grandfather. Onyo knows very well that Yeye had to go through a long struggle to find that name. There is a sentence full of determination from Hendrik Lo that he will never forget.   "Because I know very well the struggle Yeye went through to get that name, he said, 'My first grandchild must have that name,'" he said.

Onyo reminisced that he was around 15 or 16 years old at that time. His grandfather tirelessly searched for the right name, even when the first day did not yield results, Yeye did not give up and continued to search for it the next day. That struggle shows how important Onyo is in the eyes of his grandfather.

"So back then I was around 15 years old, almost 16, and Yeye was looking for me until he found me. The next day he still couldn't find me, but he looked for me again," he said.

Not only about the name, there is another habit of the grandfather that always warms Onyo's heart. Yeye always took pride in himself in front of his friends. With great pride, Sarwendah's father often praised the singing talent of his first grandchild.

"And the words that always linger in my mind, the ones I remember the most, are that he always took pride in me to his friends. 'I have a grandchild with a great voice,'" he said.

Although when asked he admitted he forgot the detailed meaning of his Chinese name, what is most important for Onyo is the process and love behind it. The naming is a confirmation of his status as the long-awaited grandson. This is also what made Yeye want other grandsons to have honorable names as well.   "The younger siblings also have it, Thania too, she said, 'My grandson who is a boy must have it'," he explained.
