Eross Sheila On 7 Reveals the Secret of Learning Guitar for the First Time Using Skid Row Songs Since 1993!

Eross Candra, the guitarist of the band Sheila On 7, recently reminisced about his past in the music world. Who would have thought, the musician known for his impressive guitar playing technique has very specific memories of the first time he seriously touched the instrument.

His long journey as one of the best guitarists in the country apparently began with a curiosity about a foreign rock song. In an interview with KapanLagi.com, Eross recalled the moment he started learning basic notes. He emphasized that at that time, he did not immediately perform the entire song, but focused on learning basic techniques through one of the hit songs from an American rock band.

"It wasn't about performing, but learning. Learning the song by Skid Row, titled 'I Remember You,'" said Eross Candra, Thursday (16/4/2026).

That moment became a turning point for this man born in Yogyakarta. Since discovering the song by Skid Row, Eross became obsessed with owning his own instrument and continued to hone his skills every day. He still vividly remembers exactly when he got his first guitar, which became a silent witness to the beginning of his career.

The year 1993 was a very historic year for Eross. In that year, he not only learned rock songs but also began to build his identity as a musician who would later shake up the Indonesian music industry alongside Sheila On 7. "The year '93 was significant. My first guitar was in '93," Eross explained.

For Eross, choosing a guitar is not just a matter of aesthetics or price. Based on his experience since he started learning, physical comfort is the main factor. He believes that every guitar player must find an instrument that truly connects with their body, much like finding a soulmate.

Eross also provides valuable tips for beginners so they don't get caught up in trends when wanting to buy their first guitar. According to him, the compatibility between the instrument and the player cannot be generalized or just follow someone else's theory.

"Okay, a guitar is something that directly relates to your physicality. So there's no theory that because I fit, you must fit too. Not necessarily," he said. "So everything must be tried, don’t just look at the brand. If you fit, if you like it, then that's your match. So there's no saying that if I fit, you must fit, that saying doesn't exist," Eross continued.

Now, after decades have passed, Eross has a large collection of guitars that accompany him on various big stages. Interestingly, he is reluctant to count how many guitars he has in his collection. Instead of feeling proud, Eross actually feels worried if he has to know the exact number of guitars he currently owns.

Eross's honesty certainly invites laughter, considering his status as one of the iconic guitarists in the country. He prefers to take care of his collection without being burdened by the need to count the physical items in his residence. "Thank God I don't count them. If I count them, I will be anxious, so I don't count them," concluded Eross.
