How Fairuz A Rafiq and Sonny Septian Encourage Their Child to Learn Fasting

Celebrity couple Fairuz A Rafiq and Sonny Septian share a unique story about their children's journey learning to fast this Ramadan. The main focus is on the youngest, King Zhafi Zayyan Slofa, who is now four years old and is starting to be taught to wake up for sahur.

Fairuz admits that waking up a small child in the early hours is not an easy task and is full of drama. She recounts that Zhafi often feels very sleepy and shows a spoiled attitude when being woken up.

Unlike his older brother, Eijaz, who is already more accustomed to it, Zhafi still needs special handling to get him to leave his bed for sahur.

"If it's Zhafi, he still gets cranky during sahur. He often says things like 'Hah.. later..' and so on. So he needs to be gently coaxed first," said Fairuz A Rafiq when met in the Tendean area, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (24/2/2016).

To combat his child's laziness and drowsiness, Sonny Septian has his own trick. He explains in a way that is easy for children to understand, by promising a reward if they successfully perform their worship well. This strategy has proven effective in motivating their children.

"But eventually we tell them that Allah loves us, and later if we pray and ask for anything, Allah will give it to us. Later if Brother and Little Brother ask Daddy for anything, Allah will move Mommy Daddy's heart to give you whatever you want. In the end, he becomes excited because of that reward, right? Kids only understand that," Sonny Septian explained.

Their children have started counting the days until Eid to get the gifts they desire. Sonny and Fairuz allow their children to ask for anything as a form of appreciation for their efforts in fasting for a whole month.

"Just like earlier, for example, when they start counting down. 'Oh no, it's already 5 days of fasting, how many days until Eid, Dad?' What's wrong with that? 'Later, I want to buy this, I want to buy that' like that," explained Sonny Septian.

"So later the reward will be when it's time for takbir. They can ask for anything they want. Thankfully, our children never ask for anything strange, my dear," added Fairuz A Rafiq.
