Antagonist characters often serve as the spice that makes a film's story feel more alive and dramatic. This is what senior actress Maya Hasan successfully brought to life in Netflix's latest original film, A NORMAL WOMAN.

At a press conference held at Plaza Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (23/7/2025), Maya Hasan shared her experience portraying Novi, the mother of the main character Milla (Marissa Anita). Her manipulative and demanding character successfully made the audience feel frustrated.

Novi's role is depicted as a mother who sees her child, Milla, as an investment project. Instead of providing unconditional love, Novi pressures Milla to meet the expectations of high-class socialites, even when the child has an accident.

Maya Hasan states that her role this time is a reminder of how a mother should not behave. She sees Novi as an extreme example of transactional love.

"For me, Novi serves as a reminder that a child is not an investment, not to be exploited, but a trust. Novi can be an example of transactional love," said Maya Hasan.

The 53-year-old woman added that she herself, as a mother, learns a lot from this character. According to her, family relationships should be a place for mutual growth, not a venue for exploitation.

"Meanwhile, I experienced firsthand that in a family, both children and parents grow together, and that's where unconditional love lives," she continued.

One of the most memorable scenes is when Milla has an accident and crashes into glass. Instead of panicking, Novi sees the incident as an opportunity for plastic surgery on her child's face. This moment immediately elicited shocked reactions as well as bittersweet laughter from the audience.
