Paula Verhoeven Reports Alleged Violations of the Judicial Code of Ethics to the Judicial Commission

The legal representative of Paula Verhoeven, Siti Aminah, has officially reported alleged violations of the code of ethics by the panel of judges handling the divorce case between her client and Baim Wong to the Judicial Commission (KY). The report was submitted directly at the KY office in Central Jakarta on Monday, May 5, 2025.

"Those who have the mandate to uphold the dignity and honor of judges will respond to efforts to remind judges, especially the examining panel, to be investigated for possible violations of the code of ethics and guidelines for judge conduct," said Siti Aminah at the Judicial Commission office in Central Jakarta on Monday (5/5/2025).

She emphasized that the report submitted has covered several major points, including issues of justice, impartiality, and the professionalism of judges.

"Earlier, we indeed conveyed the main points regarding the alleged violations of the code of ethics, such as behaving fairly, treating equally, being impartial, and maintaining professionalism, which will later be investigated by the relevant examination officers," he said.

Siti explained that complaints to the Judicial Commission (KY) can be made by anyone, including the general public. The report from Paula's side has now entered the stage of review and internal examination.

"It was mentioned earlier that the reporting process at KY can be initiated not only by the complainant but also by the general public, and the process will involve review and examination, so the stages of Ms. Paula's complaint will later include examining the statements related to the earlier allegations," he said.

In the report, the party also highlighted the potential discrimination against women facing the law. Siti emphasized the importance of using Supreme Court Regulation (Perma) Number 3 of 2017 as a guideline in examining cases involving women.

"Of course, we hope this becomes a concern, including the issue of women facing the law. The Supreme Court has issued Perma No 3 of 2017 regarding guidelines for examining women facing the law," she said.

According to her, in Paula's case, the panel of judges did not demonstrate the use of a gender perspective, which should have been a primary consideration in the judicial process.

"The panel of judges should have used that guideline. What guideline? That is to consider discrimination and women's experiences of violence and the experience of discrimination that we see in the trial process and that analysis was not used in the decision," Siti revealed.

As a result of this, according to Siti, her client feels treated unfairly and becomes a victim of the stereotypes that arise from the statements of the judges and the court spokesperson.

"Thus, it causes women, in this case, Mrs. Paula, to be cornered and experience stereotyping as a result of the behavior of the judges or the spokesperson of the Religious Court," she concluded.
