The film Gowok: Kamasutra Jawa will be released in Indonesian cinemas on June 5, 2025. Directed by Hanung Bramantyo, this film raises a unique theme related to sexual education traditions in Javanese culture through a female character known as gowok.
Reza Rahadian, who also stars in the film, believes that Gowok is not just an art piece, but also a space that will open conversations in society about sensitive issues that are often avoided.
The film Gowok is set in the period of 1955–1965 and tells the story of a woman named Nyai Santi, a gowok who teaches prospective grooms how to understand and satisfy their partners in marriage.
In his statement to the media when met at Plaza Indonesia, Central Jakarta on Monday (26/5/2025), Reza expressed hope that this film could spark healthy public discussions.
"Well, I don't know if it's easy or not, we haven't released this yet. But this will open up a lot of dialogue, a lot of conversations in society, and that's exactly what I'm looking forward to from a film, which creates conversations so that many people are interested in watching this film," said Reza.
Through his involvement in this film, Reza collaborates again with Hanung Bramantyo, a director who often partners with him on heavy and reflective themed projects.
Reza believes that society needs to be given space to understand local history and culture more openly. He is confident that this film will contribute to shaping that understanding.
With a theme still considered taboo, this film is presented with a sensitive narrative and cinematic approach. Reza hopes that the audience can see the cultural values behind the story of gowok, not just its explicit side.
Reza himself has no problem if this film sparks controversy. According to him, the main purpose of art is to evoke curiosity and encourage dialogue.
