10 Portraits of Luna Maya Describe the Figure of Nyai that She Portrays in the Film 'GUNDIK', Living in Two Worlds - Difficulty Finding References

Luna Maya once again proves her abilities in the acting world through her latest film titled GUNDIK. In this film directed by Anggy Umbara, Luna faces the challenge of portraying the character Nyai, a figure who is not an ordinary human and lives in two worlds.

The film GUNDIK is scheduled to be released in cinemas across Indonesia starting May 22, 2025. This project is produced by Umbara Brothers Film in collaboration with Makara Production and Rumpi Entertainment. Here are the details.

The character Nyai that she portrays is depicted as a dark figure with unusual powers, existing between the real world and the supernatural. Luna admits it is not easy to delve into the character of Nyai, for which she has no reference in the real world.

"The difficulty is that this Nyai is a human, yes but not, a spirit yes but not. So indeed, a person who lives in two worlds, which I have never encountered anyone like that," said Luna Maya at XXI Plaza Jatinegara, East Jakarta, on Wednesday (23/4/2025).

"So I don't have a reference for a person or figure who lives in the world of immortality or something so dark for her to kill sometimes like in the game world, she laughs, she's happy like that," she added.

For Luna, the character of Nyai is very far from the personality of an average human, including herself. She admits that she has no real reference regarding a figure that has a life in the realm of eternity, let alone someone who can feel happy while killing.

"Whereas a Luna or an average human, as far as I know from my interactions, has never been that dark. So, it's a bit like wow, she is very much alive in a very dark world, which I find hard to imagine and feel entering Nyai because I've never encountered Nyi Roro Kidul or Nyi Blorong in real life, whether they actually exist or not," said Luna.

To deeply portray the character of Nyai, Luna uses her imagination as much as possible. She feels challenged because she has to shape a character she has never encountered in reality before. "So indeed we are like shaping a carving of a person with that character using imagination, and that I think is quite difficult, but thank God I was helped by Anggy as the director and also by other actors, especially Mas Rosa, who often becomes my partner, Mas Rosa, Rukman Rosadi. So besides being an actor, he also happens to be an acting coach," she explained.

Rukman Rosadi, who also plays a role in the film, became an important partner for Luna during the production process. Intensive discussions with Rukman helped her to better understand the dark world that the character Nyai possesses. "So there were a lot of discussions with Mas Rosa, a lot of talking with Mas Rosa about how it is. Yes, he said my character and Mas Rosa's are difficult because of the dark world, while hopefully, insyaallah, we are not people whose hearts are like that," said Luna.

Luna also shared about how to maintain her mood while on the exhausting shooting location. According to her, the heavy shooting conditions actually support the mood of the character Nyai, who is always under pressure. "Nyai's mood is always bad, she is quite grumpy, and indeed because of the shooting situation, so actually those frustrations help a lot, coming home in the morning, what I worry about is if we have too much fun on set. It’s hard (to get into character)," she revealed.

The character Nyai is indeed not a figure that can be portrayed with a cheerful expression. She even feels happy when witnessing suffering, which is very much the opposite of humans in general.

"Because this is not the type of character that is (cheerful). But sometimes when she sees something where someone is about to die, she actually feels happy, it's the opposite, that's why her world is already different from ours," said Luna.
