'ALMARHUM', A Horror Film Rich in Javanese Myths Ready to Haunt Audiences Starting January 9, 2025

The horror film ALMARHUM is set to greet film lovers in theaters starting January 9, 2025. Produced by Unlimited Production in collaboration with Light House, A&Z Films, and DAP, this film explores the Javanese myth about Selasa Kliwon, which is known as a day full of misfortune. The film is produced by Oswin Bonifanz and directed by Adhe Dharmastriya.

Taking inspiration from Javanese traditions, ALMARHUM highlights the belief that someone who dies on Selasa Kliwon has a spirit that struggles to reach the afterlife. Not only is this spirit said to haunt, but it is also believed to bring disaster to the family left behind. This curse becomes the core of the story that brings a tense atmosphere throughout the film. Read more below!

The story begins with the sudden death of Mr. Mulwanto, played by Rukman Rosadi, on Tuesday Kliwon. This event brings terror to his family, especially Wisesa (Dimas Aditya), the eldest son who works as a doctor.

Unlike his mother Rahmi (Nova Eliza), who believes in traditional rituals, Wisesa refuses to follow customs to ward off disaster. This conflict leads their family into a series of strange events that slowly blur the lines between myth and reality.

“We want to bring to life the mystical elements of the Tuesday Kliwon myth in a way that is relatable to modern audiences. This film balances supernatural tension with the emotional depth of characters facing loss and fear,” explained Adhe when met in the Bekasi area recently.

Producer Oswin Bonifanz added that the late one also offers a deep reflection on modern life.   “In this modern era, many people are busy chasing worldly titles, whether professional or academic, until they forget to prepare themselves for their eternal title as the deceased. This film invites the audience to reflect on the balance between worldly achievements and spiritual provisions,” said Oswin.

Director Adhe Dharmastriya explained that the late one not only presents horror tension but also explores the emotional side of family relationships faced with trauma.

Dimas Aditya, the actor playing the main character Wisesa, admitted that the shooting process of the late one was a profound and challenging experience.   “The shooting process of this film was truly deep, not only technically but also emotionally. I had to delve into emotions of loss and fear. Additionally, I learned a lot about Javanese traditions, especially the myth of Selasa Kliwon, which I previously only knew superficially,” said Dimas.

The equally extreme experience was felt by Ratu Sofya, who played Nuri, Wisesa's sister. She revealed one of the most challenging scenes in this film.

"One of the most challenging scenes was when I had to be buried for 6 hours. The condition was truly terrifying, my body was shivering, my breath was short, and it felt unforgettable even after the shooting was over. All of that was to provide a real horror experience for you all. You absolutely must watch Almarhum," said Ratu.
