Asri Welas Becomes a Nosy Neighbor in the Film 'COCOTE TONGGO', Very Judgmental Because She Likes to Comment on Other People's Lives

Asri Welas returns to the big screen with her latest film titled COCOTE TONGGO, directed by Bayu Skak. In this film, she plays the character Bu Pur, a neighbor known for being nosy and judgmental along with her two friends, Bu Heri and Bu Wira.

Although she often appears as a good character in various previous films, this time Asri has to fight against her own instincts. She admits to having quite a hard time fully embodying a character that enjoys commenting on other people's affairs.

“The difficulty is that I have never played such a judgmental character. It's always either I am down and out, or it’s really hard to be judgmental. Sometimes Bayu says 'don’t be too nice' because I’m afraid to speak in a way I’ve never spoken before," Asri Welas said at XXI Epicentrum, South Jakarta, on Friday (9/5/2025). Here are the details.

This player and presenter considers COCOTE TONGGO to have a connection with the daily lives of many people. According to him, life as neighbors and on social media is often filled with comments and judgments from others.

"Whether good or not, our lives are always commented on, whether good or not, whatever we get, there are always people who like or dislike it. This film really tells our story in our world as neighbors and in our digital world," he said.

"Whatever happens in our lives, whether we are celebrities or not, if it is not normal, there is a language of normalcy. What is normal for others is very different from what is normal for us; if they knew the condition, they would not be in my shoes," he added.

The challenges she faced as Mrs. Pur turned out to impact her perspective on life. After delving into the character who likes to meddle in her neighbors' affairs, Asri became more self-aware in her behavior.

"This film tells that you are not in our shoes, so if you comment on anything, you actually can't because you are not in our shoes. You are not in our lives, you do not feel. There are actions, why I can be so judgmental is because of the past," said Asri Welas.

"So when someone comments judgmentally, maybe there is a painful past they have, which is why they express it that way. Being judgmental, is that wrong? The audience judges. Do you want to be in the position of being judgmental or in the position of being judged," she continued.

He also admitted that he is increasingly reluctant to comment on other people's lives. According to him, everyone has their own history that cannot all be seen from the outside. "I don't dare to comment on anything about why he is like that; there is a history behind it that we don't know. After watching this film, I am even less daring to comment on others, I don't know," he added.

The film COCOTE TONGGO itself takes an interesting perspective on a seemingly ordinary social environment, yet it holds its own pressures. Bayu Skak, the director, wants to illustrate how neighborly relationships can have a significant impact on a person's life.

"In this film, we want to show that social pressure often comes not from those who are emotionally close, but from those who, just because they live next to each other, feel entitled to express their opinions," said Bayu Skak.

This film is supported by a lineup of renowned actors and actresses such as Ayushita, Dennis Adishwara, Sundari Soekotjo, Brilliana Arfira, Ika Diharjo, and Bayu Skak himself. COCOTE TONGGO will be released simultaneously in cinemas across Indonesia starting May 15, 2025.
