Chairman of BPI Agrees to Cancel 'MERAH PUTIH: ONE FOR ALL' from Theaters

Gunawan Paggaru, as the Chairman of the Indonesian Film Agency (BPI), responded to that request. He stated that he agrees if MERAH PUTIH: ONE FOR ALL is canceled from theaters.

“I agree. It’s better to cancel it so that we can learn a lot. And it’s dangerous for XXI,” Gunawan said as quoted by medcom.id on Wednesday (13/8).

1. Other Filmmakers Are Already in Line

Furthermore, Gunawan expressed his concern about the fate of other filmmakers who are already in line to screen their films.

"If it (the cinema) shows something that is not worth watching, what about the people who are in line," he said.

Gunawan feels that if films do not queue, then that is not according to the rules and its distribution is questionable.

"The problem arises if suddenly one film is not suitable, and then it does not join the queue, this is problematic. In our distribution, it becomes disorganized. So, the rules being used are not clear," he added.

Although he agrees that MERAH PUTIH: ONE FOR ALL should be canceled from screening in cinemas, Gunawan still returns the authority to the cinema operators.

"Cinemas can argue, 'Well, it's up to me, I own it.' And we cannot force that. There are no rules to force them on which ones to show or not to show. That decision is theirs," he explained.

3. Given Freedom

"If given freedom again. The law states that way, it gives freedom to exhibitors (cinema owners) to determine the films they show. Now, this is the problem, right?" added Gunawan again.

To address this issue, Gunawan suggests that the government create stricter regulations, for example by ordering the screening schedule based on the censorship number. This is expected to create a fairer and more transparent distribution system.
