Laura Basuki Almost Kicked by a Horse While Filming 'YOHANNA'

Actress Laura Basuki once again demonstrates her dedication in the film YOHANNA. This time, she has to face an unusual challenge, which is riding wild horses typical of Sumba to delve into her role as a nun named Yohanna.

In the production process of this film directed by Razka Robby Ertanto, Laura is not only challenged emotionally but also physically. One of the quite challenging scenes is when she has to interact directly with the wild horses on the filming location.

This experience turned out to be no easy feat for Laura. She admitted that she had to undergo a workshop first to adapt to the animal, considering the character of Sumba horses, which are quite wild and not easy to control.

"Yes, at first the horse was a wild horse, a Sumba horse. Heem, so there is indeed a trainer but there is still a workshop," said Laura when met in South Jakarta on Monday (6/4/2024).

Even though she had undergone preparations, risks could not be avoided. Laura even experienced a tense moment during the training process.

"I almost got kicked, I was saved and pulled by locals who are used to handling those horses," she said.

The situation became more challenging because during filming, she did not always use the horse she was familiar with during training. This made her have to readapt to the different conditions on the field. "Yes, that's the fun of filming," Laura said.

Not only about technique, Laura also revealed that riding a horse requires a calm mental state. She realized that the actor's emotions can affect the responses of the animals around them. "First, you have to be calm and you must not startle them," she said.

However, in practice, the scenes actually demand spontaneous movements that could potentially startle the horse. This presents a unique challenge that she had to face during the shooting process. "Well, that actually can't happen, you have to get acquainted first," Laura said.

Although full of risks, the experience became one of the most memorable moments for Laura during her involvement in this film. She considers the process an important part of fully developing the character of Yohanna.

The film Yohanna tells the story of a young nun on a humanitarian mission in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. Throughout her journey, she must face various social challenges that shake her beliefs.

Scheduled to premiere on April 9, 2026, in Indonesian cinemas, this film not only presents an emotional drama but also an authentic visual experience of the exotic nature of Sumba.
