Kapanlagi.com - The Indonesian horror film industry is once again enlivened by the presence of a new ghost ready to terrorize cinemas. Coming from Belitung mythology, the headless ghost named Penebok will be the main antagonist in the latest film produced by Sinemata Buana Kreasindo, THE BELL: CALL FOR DEATH.
The producers, including Avisenna Subli and Budi Yulianto, expressed their optimism that Penebok has great potential to become a new horror icon, following the popularity of kuntilanak or pocong. The decision to bring this folklore, which is still rarely explored, was made as an effort to present something fresh for the audience.
Aris Muda Irawan, one of the producers, explained that the name Penebok may still be unfamiliar to many people. This is precisely the main reason why this film was made.
"From my media friends, has anyone ever heard the word or ghost Penebok? I want to know. Don't know yet? That's why this film was made," he said when met in the XXI Metropole area, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (7/4/2026).
According to Aris, Penebok is a ghost figure whose story lives around the South Sumatra region, with a very strong myth in Belitung. The elements of the story are also very complete, ranging from legends to the mysterious discovery of headless corpses.
"We combine these elements into a research, a story that emerges, and The Bell is what we present as a treasure of horror mythology in national cinema. What is the ghost? Penebok," he added.

Budi Yulianto, who is also a native of Belitung, added that this idea came from his personal experiences and the mystical stories he heard in his hometown.
"For us, the people of Belitung, if we go there and are asked about Penebok, everyone knows, because when we were little we were always scared by it," recalled Budi.
With a strong story background and gripping visuals, the filmmakers behind THE BELL hope that Penebok will not only scare but also introduce the richness of Indonesian folktales to a wider audience.
The film THE BELL: A CALL TO DIE, starring Ratu Sofya and Bhisma Mulia, is scheduled to be released in theaters starting May 7, 2026.
