'SONGKO', Horror Film from the Minahasa Legend Ready to Screen

The horror film SONGKO was officially introduced to the public through a gala premiere held at Metropole XXI, Jakarta, on Monday (13/4). This work from Dunia Mencekam Studio in collaboration with Santara brings the legend of the Minahasa community to the big screen with a gripping story rich in cultural nuances.

The gala premiere marks the beginning of this film's journey before it screens simultaneously in cinemas across Indonesia. SONGKO presents itself as one of the local horror films that offers a different approach, not only relying on visual terror but also on a story rooted in tradition. Here are the details.

The production process of this film is quite unique. The team built a special village at the foot of Mount Lokon, Tomohon, which was previously empty land. The set has become the main shooting location and still stands today, even attracting public attention as a photo spot.

In addition, the production of this film also involves a significant number of local talents. About sixty percent of the cast and crew are from Manado and its surroundings, creating a strong collaboration between national filmmakers and local creators.

A deep approach was also taken in the research process. The production team explored stories directly from community leaders to local residents to ensure the authenticity of the story is maintained. This includes various aspects, from character visuals to the atmosphere of the village presented.

This commitment becomes the main foundation in presenting SONGKO as a film that is not only scary but also culturally authentic. This film is expected to bring local stories to a wider stage without losing its identity.

"We want to bring local stories to a wider level, but still with a strong authenticity. By involving talent from their original regions, we hope these stories feel more alive and have a strong identity," explained Whisnu Baker.

Director Gerald Mamahit emphasized that this film offers horror that is closer to human reality. He highlighted how fear can trigger the destruction of social relationships within society.

"What makes Songko feel different is how the fear develops. It’s not just from the creatures, but from humans who start to lose trust in one another. That’s what we try to present: horror that feels close and real," said Gerald.

A different experience was also felt by the actors when watching this film on the big screen. The atmosphere that was previously felt during filming turned out to be much more intense when watched with other viewers in the cinema.

"During filming, we already felt the heavy atmosphere. But when watching on the big screen with other viewers, it feels much more intense. There were moments that even made me shiver," said Annette Edoarda.

Set in 1986 in a village in Tomohon, Minahasa, SONGKO tells the story of a mysterious death terror that strikes young women. The residents believe in the emergence of a creature named Songko that targets sacred blood for immortality, until fear turns into panic. The film, starring Annette Edoarda, Imelda Therinne, Fergie Brittany, Tegar Satria, and Khiva Iskak, is scheduled to be released in theaters starting April 23, 2026.
