Jim Carrey Receives Cesar Award: Every Character You Play is Like Clay

Jim Carrey received applause from prominent figures in French cinema at the 51st edition of the French Cesar Awards, where the Canadian actor received an honorary award and delivered a touching speech in French. Jim Carrey, the star of THE MASK and HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, was awarded a prize specifically given to international stars, like Julia Roberts last year.

He was introduced on stage by Michel Gondry, who directed him in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND 22 years ago. "As an actor, every character you play is like clay in the hands of a sculptor, which you shape according to the desires of your heart," Jim Carrey said in French with a strong American accent, as reported by variety.com. "How lucky I am to share this art with so many people who truly open their hearts to me," he continued.

He then revealed that "About 300 years ago, (his ancestor) great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, Marc-Francois Carre, yes, Carre, was born in France, in Saint Malo" and immigrated to Canada.

"Tonight, with this extraordinary honor, this place (carre in French) has returned to its origins," said the actor, who attended the event with his daughter Jane, his grandson Jackson, and his girlfriend Mina.

"Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you all now and forever," he continued.

"Thank you to my wonderful partner, Mina. I love you, Mina. And lastly, thank you to the funniest man I have ever known, my father. Percy Joseph Carrey who taught me the values of love, generosity, and laughter," said the 64-year-old actor.

At the end of his speech, he asked the audience.

"So, how is my French? Almost normal, right? Sorry, I can't speak French, but I am learning. My tongue is tired," he concluded.
