Predictions for the Best Films at the 2021 Awards, from NOMADLAND to SOUL

Various media outlets don't want to be left behind, various predictions are made for this grandest film event in the world.  1. THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7

Addressing the issue of dirty and cunning justice, the film THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 immediately boomed on social media when it was released through Netflix. Released in 2020, coinciding with human rights issues, the widespread protests of Black Lives Matter after the shocking death of George Floyd at the hands of the police in the United States, made this film relevant to current life.

Based on real events, THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 tells the story of a group of anti-Vietnam War activists in the United States named the Chicago 7 who held demonstrations in 1968. Ending in a riot, the demonstration resulted in a clash between protesters and local police. Eventually, the Chicago 7 were accused of inciting the riots that led to the trial. The trial is now remembered as the most biased and corrupt trial in the United States.

Starring many celebrities, this film is expected to be a standout at the 2021 Academy Awards. Especially with the acclaimed performance of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, this film is predicted to receive multiple nominations.

 2. NOMADLAND

NOMADLAND is a film that tells the story of a woman named Fern (Frances McDormand) who travels across the western part of the United States in search of work. Fern is a woman who has lost everything after the Great Recession that occurred in the United States in 2008. While wandering and living in a van, Fern meets people who are in a similar situation. Her encounters with these people change her perspective on life.

The journey of this film towards the 2021 Academy Awards deserves appreciation. Although it will be released on February 19, 2021, the film has already won various awards, especially the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

3.MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM

Taken from a true story, MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM is also touted as a strong contender at the 2021 Academy Awards. This film introduces us to the legend of Blues music, Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), and her struggle to become a famous singer in the 1920s. Ma Rainey doesn't work alone, she is assisted by a band of 3 people, namely Ada Toledo (Glynn Turman), Cutier (Colman Domingo), and Levee Green (Chadwick Boseman).

Problems arise when Ada Toledo and Cutier know that Ma Rainey is The Diva, while Levee wants something more. Levee, who also wants to make an impact on the music he plays, clashes with Ma Rainey. Added to that is the racism they experience, making this film easily enjoyable because the same issues still exist today.

4.SOUL

Pixar once again presents a high-quality animated film. Expert in presenting heart-touching animated films, Pixar now presents SOUL. This film tells the story of a man named Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a music teacher at a middle school who aspires to play jazz music on stage. One day, he falls into a coma and when he wakes up, he finds himself in the form of a soul.

While in the form of a soul, Joe Gardner explores a place called The Great Before, which contains souls that are about to be born. There, he learns many things about life. His character development changes him from being very confident in wanting to become a jazz musician to becoming doubtful, now questioning his life's purpose.

SOUL teaches the true meaning of life to its audience. In this film, we are taught that life must be fought for. Moreover, this film is released during a pandemic that has claimed the lives of many people, making it very meaningful and valuable.

5.DA 5 BLOODS

2020 is remembered as a difficult and controversial year. The Covid-19 pandemic that claimed many lives and the ongoing issue of racism are what we remember about the year 2020. Then came the film DA 5 BLOODS. Directed by Spike Lee, this film tells the story of American soldiers who return to Vietnam to search for the treasure they hid during the Vietnam War, as well as to find the remains of their leader who died during the war.

Starring Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, and Chadwick Boseman, this film shows black American soldiers who must dig up their treasure and confront their past simultaneously. The feelings of trauma and sadness can be felt in this film, making it different from other war-themed films.
