1. Synopsis 'WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS'

WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS tells a story related to the depiction of imperialism and colonialism that changed human lives. This film is set in the 19th century in the Asian region.

The story takes place in an unnamed region, where a judge (Mark Rylance) is tasked with overseeing the local multi-ethnic population. Initially, he never encountered any obstacles in his work. Until one day, the colonial government suddenly sent an authoritarian officer named Colonel Joll (Johnny Depp).

At first, Colonel Joll pretended to have a humble attitude and impressed the judge with his willingness to cooperate. However, as the commander of the colonial regime's forces, Colonel Joll then carried out a series of interrogations with quite sadistic methods, accompanied by torture. This certainly made the judge start to lose sympathy for Joll.

Although the judge protested against these cruel actions, arguing that there was no potential rebellion, Joll insisted on continuing to detain and torture many innocent local residents. He claimed to have heard information about disturbances at the border. Later on, a junior officer under Joll's command (Robert Pattinson) became involved in a series of cruel actions.
