5 Struggles of Coldplay Meeting BTS for the Collaboration Song 'My Universe'

Kapanlagi.com - Coldplay has just released their latest song with BTS titled My Universe. The song, released on September 24, 2021, is Coldplay's second single in their latest album Music of the Spheres.

Unlike the first single Higher Power in the album, My Universe which collaborates with BTS is presented in a bilingual format. In addition to English, the lyrics are also written in Korean.

Both Coldplay and BTS were directly involved in the production process of My Universe. However, long before this song was released, Coldplay, especially Chris Martin, had to struggle hard to meet BTS.

In an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music 1, Chris Martin openly shared his journey of collaborating with BTS for a special interview for the New Music Daily content on the music platform. What was it like?

1. Initial Collaboration Idea with BTS

Chris Martin revealed that this song came from a word of love. "Then, in my mind, I remembered BTS, who always dreamed of having a song made by Coldplay someday," said Chris.

In that instant, the words 'My Universe' appeared in Chris Martin's mind. "Oh, this is a cool title," Chris Martin continued to recount his thoughts at that time.

2. Song for BTS

Chris Martin then consulted with Bill Rahko, a producer who often creates Coldplay songs, until finally the chorus of My Universe began to take shape.

After that, Chris returned to the studio and started singing the chorus of My Universe and felt that the song was really good.

"Then I called Phil, our fifth member, and Max Martin, and told them, 'It seems like we have a song that can be given to BTS'," Chris explained.

Unexpectedly, Chris Martin received a positive response from his colleagues. "What else are we waiting for, just give it to BTS," Chris imitated Phil and Max's response.

3. Start Communicating with BTS

Communication began between Coldplay and BTS's management, Big Hit Music/HYBE. However, instead of simply accepting the offer from the admired musicians, BTS actually asked Coldplay to sing together in the song 'My Universe.'

Coldplay eventually agreed to this collaboration idea because BTS comes from a different country, race, language, and generation than them. This is what later gave birth to the lyrics 'Come on, hold my hand. We can't be together because we come from different sides.'

4. Flying to Korea

Not satisfied with just online communication, Chris Martin decided to secretly fly to Korea in April 2021. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, Chris had to undergo self-quarantine for a few days before meeting BTS in Korea.

"For a few days, I was in my hotel room alone, unsure of what to do, and I didn't understand the language of the people around me. But I kept encouraging myself to be able to meet BTS," said Chris Martin.

After the quarantine period ended, Chris was then picked up by HYBE's special staff while being asked to wear a hoodie with 'BTS CREW' written on it for privacy reasons and to avoid media attention.

5. Even Though It Was Full of Twists and Turns, It Became a Fun Collaboration

At the end of the interview, Chris Martin revealed that collaborating with BTS was very exciting, despite going through various ups and downs.

"I admire BTS, Coldplay admires BTS, and this collaboration has been fun for us. We joke around occasionally, but when it comes to music, you become serious. So, the process has been very enjoyable," said Chris Martin.

He then added, "Without any shame, I am very proud and grateful for this collaboration, both to the person who inspired this song and to BTS for singing with us."

As a form of appreciation for each other in this collaboration, BTS presented a special Hanbok to Coldplay, while Chris Martin gave his favorite guitar to BTS.
