Arman Maulana to Ariel NOAH Speak Out on Performance Rights at UPH Seminar

Kapanlagi.com - The legal issues in the Indonesian music industry are becoming increasingly discussed, especially regarding performance rights or the rights of musicians to perform. This topic became the main discussion at the National Seminar themed 'Legal and Business Aspects in the Creative Industry' held at Pelita Harapan University (UPH), Karawaci, Tangerang, Banten, on Wednesday (23/7).

What makes this event even more special is that it was attended by big names in the music world such as Armand Maulana, Ariel NOAH, Bunga Citra Lestari, and Judika. They are part of VISI (Voice of Indonesian Singer Initiative), an organization that accommodates singers to voice their rights in the creative industry.

Armand emphasized that this issue does not only concern singers but also the entire music ecosystem, from event organizers, promoters, to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that are usually part of concert or music event organization.

1. Conduct a Material Test

"The more we go on, the more cases there are. And these cases are not internal; they are already discussing the entire ecosystem. It's not just about the singers, but also involves other stakeholders, like organizers, promoters, and so on," he explained.

"Finally, we conducted a material test at the Constitutional Court, and yesterday we already had three out of five," said Armand.

In this fast-paced social media era, Armand reminded that the issue of performance rights cannot be explained simply. If simplified, it could actually lead to misunderstandings.

2. Many Narratives that Suppress

Armand also highlighted the many narratives that have emerged in public that actually suppress the position of musicians. Therefore, VISI has started to actively appear on various platforms, including podcasts and media, to explain the matter directly from the source.

"Over time, these narratives not only discredit the singers, but also increasingly create confusion and chaos for café owners, wedding planners, and others," he added.

3. Voice It Seriously

"So it's no longer just one problem, that's why it seems like we really have to move towards podcasts or to anyone, eventually it goes on," added Armand.

The presence of top musicians in this forum is a strong signal that creative industry players are starting to voice their aspirations seriously. Through discussions like this, there is hope for solutions that are not only fair for singers but also for all music industry players in Indonesia.
