Baskara Putra Reveals the Secrets Behind Bernadya's Song 'The Calm Ocean'

Kapanlagi.com - Singer Bernadya has officially released her second studio album titled 'Hopefully Only in Dreams.' In the creative process of this album, she collaborated with several musicians, including Baskara Putra or Hindia, who was also involved in the production of the opening song.

Baskara was entrusted as one of the songwriters for the first track titled 'The Calm Ocean.' The song was born from Bernadya's anxiety as she admitted to experiencing a creative block because she felt her life was going too smoothly without conflict.

"Um, at that time when I was at Enrico's studio, he said, 'I don’t know what to write for the second album.' Then I said, why not just write about that? Just take it as a topic, right, if you don’t know what to write because your life is very calm right now," said Baskara Putra when met at Citos, Thursday (25/6/2024).

According to Baskara, Bernadya was initially worried about writing about the happiness or tranquility she was feeling. The singer from Surabaya was afraid that this tranquility might actually be a sign of something bad coming.

Together with producer Enrico Octaviano, Baskara then encouraged Bernadya to make that anxiety the common thread of the album. From that discussion, they searched for the right metaphor and eventually found the symbol "sea" as a representation of tranquility that holds a question mark.

"We were looking for it. At that time, the three of us were searching for what the metaphor would be. Because at that moment, Ananda Bernadya didn’t know what to write, like if this topic was raised, what would the metaphor be, what would the symbolism be for the entire album. Until we finally got the sea," said Baskara.

4. Bernadya Helped by Baskara

Bernadya admitted that she was greatly helped by Baskara's perspective in developing the song's idea. From that discussion process, she finally found the lyrics that became the foundation for the entire story in the album Semoga Hanya di Mimpi.

"No, that's what Bas already told me, 'Just write from there. Write from... your life is calm.' We started from there. 'In fact, you're afraid something big will happen that you don't expect.' Then I... that's what I wrote at home, but I felt like, 'I haven't found it yet though.' 'However, something suspicious should be noted...' Then after that, but what should be suspicious? Then Bas said, 'However, a calm sea should be suspected.' Finally, we got the calm sea from there. Baskara is really smart, right?" said Bernadya.

6. The Calm Ocean Becomes the Focus Track

Bernadya said that The Calm Ocean was finally chosen as the focus track because it became the starting point for the birth of all the songs in the album. From that one song, she then developed various stories about the fears that had been buried for a long time.

"Oh because this is what finally directed me to write the rest of the tracks. All the tracks originated from this song. Like, 'Oh okay, I'll just write songs about what I'm afraid of.' In the end, it was chosen as the focus track of the first single in this album," concluded Bernadya.
